The whole ability to do this lies on being able to set the camera to a very wide aperture. You didn't specify which camera and lens you are using. They are using the camera set at 1.8f in this example. (The 8f and 11f stated above will not work)

Not everything is done in Photoshop, there are many, many neat effects used prior to the advent of digital manipulation.

Note that in one example it says "There is only one real "heart" in this picture." Looks to me as though its a PhotoShop trick.

EDIT: Note to "photographer" - you are completely wrong. f1.2 or f1.8 or f2 or f2.8 (depending on the lens) is WIDE OPEN. Its an inverse relationship - the smaller the number the BIGGER the opening in the diaphragm of the lens. So f8 or f11 or f16 0r f22 or f32 would be a very SMALL opening in the diaphragm.

Try wide open with something like Christmas lights in the background. The lights should take on the heart shape. I am going to try this too!

There are specialty filters you can buy, for that effect, or you can recreate the effect in Photoshop.

okay,

did u do this: Set your camera to its lowest aperture value (completely open). this means f/8 /f11+, I had to note this sometimes beginners confuse aperture settings.

Also make sure ur background will give you enough contrast to show those hearts! try pointing your camera at a street lamps at night. It might work. So don't try this trick during daylight, it won't work.

why doesn't it work any symptoms? maybe show us some sample shots?
