It depends on which generation you belong to (how old you are) and what area of the country you come from. I grew up in one of our central southern states and use this term all the time because it was used in my family and I still use it to refer to 'soda pops' ... lol. I don't know if the habit passed on to my grown children or not though. I use the term to distinguish between 'soft drinks' and drinks mixed with alcohol, so there is method to the madness.

We call it "soft drink" at the fast food restaurants. But mostly we call it "pop". Pop is the sound that the original pop bottles made when you drove the cork into the bottle with the S shaped wire that stuck out the top. In the midwest we had soda fountains too, but we call it pop. But in the east they call it soda. If you call it soda you are wrong, it is pop! Ok I am just joking about that. But we shortened soda pop to just pop.

The term "soft drink" would be used if it's on a menu but "soda" is most commonly used in conversation on the west coast. "Pop" is used in the midwest and south I believe. In the U.K. it is known as "fizzy drinks." That makes me laugh everytime! In Ireland it is sometimes called "minerals" which I don't understand at all.

No, perhaps Americans think a 'soft drink' is for puppies or sissies and unfit for Yankees. No harm in flaunting a tough guy image as there are always a good number of people who believe what they just see.
