bought a 1080p Sharp 46inch TV...connected to my cable box (it is the box TW gives for digital cable). Time Warner did not tell me I need any kind of special package, I just have extended Basic cable service.., I connected it using component cable connections...then went and got HDMI cable....why is the image worse with HDMI? is there a set-up I am not doing? Also.....how come I get the side bars when watching TV channels? I am a newbie to all this new stuff so any info on how things should connect/work/show on the TV....would be MUCH appreciated. Also, when i got the TV I had the "old" cable box and it gave me some really sharp images on some channels I did not have before w/my regular TV...like instead of channel 4 I had channel 4.1, 4.2 etc....now with the new box, those do not show. And nothing is as "Sharp" as what they had at Best Buy....feel free to tell me I have been had.

First - you need to get HD service. Standard def will does not look very good on high-resolution displays.

Second - Standard Def channels are the 4:3 ratio. All HDTV shows are the closer-to-movie-screens ratio of 16:9.

If it really bothers you - your remote should have a "aspect" button or the menu system should let you stretch the image to fit.

Getting real HD service will eliminate the black bars.

Showrooms use HD video to show off the TVs. You are displaying standard def (limit of technology in the 1940's).

All your questions will be answered once you get real HD service.
