“Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.”

Step back for just a moment from the specific “how to” advice you will get in answer to your question here and consider the fundamentals of weight loss. Perhaps this will help you focus clearly on what’s involved in losing weight, and how to evaluate the advice you’ll get.

The laws of physics (thermodynamics) dictate that there is only one way to lose weight: OVER TIME, YOU MUST BURN MORE CALORIES THAN YOU EAT. This is an inescapable Truth. The best way to do this is to increase the amount of exercise you get (burn more calories) and decrease your food intake (take fewer calories on board). Such a program will RELIABLY result in weight loss because it leads you to burn more calories than you eat.

In a nutshell, the basic principles of weight loss are really very simple:
• More calories burned than eaten = weight loss
• More calories eaten than burned = weight gain

So, moving on to specifics now, these simple equations means that you have two powerful control points:
1. TO BURN MORE CALORIES, EXERCISE MORE. Start slowly, being careful to avoid injury, and build up in endurance and intensity. The important things are to choose exercises that you enjoy, to do them frequently (daily, if possible), and to raise your heart rate significantly. And by the way, exercising as a part of your weight-loss regimen yields the added benefits of improved cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and mental health as well.
2. TO TAKE FEWER CALORIES ON BOARD, EAT LESS. This is obvious, and it can be difficult, but there’s often no way around it. Develop a balanced diet of healthy foods and eat in moderation. It can be helpful to calculate the calories you consume in a day (food labels and books of caloric values make this easy) so that you know your daily caloric intake and can calibrate your daily exercise accordingly.

There is some partial good news about foods: solely in terms of weight loss it’s not WHAT you eat, but HOW MANY CALORIES YOU EAT that counts. You can go on a chocolate cake diet and enjoy eating nothing but chocolate cake to the tune of 3,000 calories per day, but if you burn 3,500 calories per day exercising, you will unfailingly lose weight. Obviously, in terms of your health, this would not be a wise idea; it’s important to eat a balanced diet of healthy foods. But you can see that the laws of physics give you a great deal of flexibility in what you eat. You needn’t feel deprived of things you enjoy eating. But you must enjoy them in moderation.

There are no magic potions or silver bullets. Most “diets” aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on, and many “diet gurus” are better at taking weight off of your wallet than off of you. People may advise you to drink gallons of water, eat only carrots or grapefruit, undergo hypnosis, shun carbohydrates or fats, take magical herbal medicines, buy peculiar exercise equipment, or try any number of other silly and exotic tricks. NONE OF THESE EMPOWERS YOU TO VIOLATE THE LAWS OF PHYSICS, so not only are they ineffective weight-loss methods, but they can sometimes be risky for your health. Ignore them completely. Eat whatever foods you want within a healthy diet – just don’t consume more calories than you burn – and get lots of the kinds of exercises that raise your heart rate.

There is a great deal of information available on the web about exercise and nutrition. Be informed! Do a web-search on “nutrition” or “calories” or “weight loss” or “exercise” and explore. Ignore sites that are merely sales pitches for diets or putative magic bullets.

Achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight through the combination of sound nutrition and regular, strenuous exercise requires a life-long commitment. The results – lasting physical and mental health – are certainly worth it.

Keep a lot of dried fruit around. Eat properly portioned meals then keep the fruit ready. Unhealthy food should not be kept in easy reach or should be things that need to be cooked so you have time to think about it before you eat. No candy bars. Any time you want to much, eat some fruit. It's better, it's sweet. You can get apricots which are more gummy or something like banana chips which are crunchy. This will help. Trust me, I lost 62 lbs in 4mnths just by not eating all junk food. I ate a LOT of dried fruit though. keep plenty of fluids and do allow yourself an indulgence once a day or week. No diet is perfect. If you try to be and you lapse, you will feel even worse.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.

I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.

It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

Get started today!

The best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and exercise regularly. I know, I have recently lost 48lbs in just over 5 months.

I ate only:- Lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, vegetables, (including potatoes, brown rice, brown pasta) these are low in fat. Just keep them plain and simple, fresh fruit, (not dried), whole grains, beans & pulses, skimmed milk, low fat dairy products, non sugary cereals, coffee, tea and sugar free beverages.

I ate these only in MODERATION (and still do)- Take away meals, ready made meals you buy in the supermarket, processed meats, biscuits, cakes, chocolate, sweets, alcohol, sugared fizzy drinks. All of these are full of saturated fat, sugar and salt. They add to those unwanted pounds.

I joined a gym and attended 5/6 times a week for 1 hour at a time ( and still do). This I know acellerated my weight loss and now helps to maintain it.

Snack on fresh fruit only in between meals. Eat slowly, drink plently of water, stop eating when you feel full, cut your portiion sizes down too.

This is the best way to lose weight. Then when you have lost the weight you have carry on like this. Making sure you change your lifestyle for good. Otherwise all the weight will go back on again, plus more.

The one you can stick to on a daily basis.
You have to change your lifestyle to lose weight - its what got you where you are now...
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 400-600cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day (have lots of veggies to eat in between meals if you are still hungry)
8 glasses of water -carry bottle of water with you and when you feel hungry drink it - we often confuse hunger with thirst (our bodies confuse it)
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio is the only fat burning exercise and burns fat all over your body (running, jogging, swimming, spinning, elliptical etc) 4-6 times a week for average of 45min, light weight training a few times a week (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, ice cream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
of course you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
