I have learned that religious people even though they believe in "heaven" have a great fear of death that atheists and agnostics don't seem to share. Why is this?

by "religious" I mean all people who follow organised religion and lead thier live based on a "holy book" but fear of death does seem to be more pronounced in christians and to a greater extent catholics.

I trust you separate 'religious' people from Christians.

True Christians know the Bible promises a better future than what we now have.

(REVELATION 21:4) And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

(PSALM 37:9) For evildoers themselves will be cut off, But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth.

(PSALM 37:11) But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.

(PSALM 37:29) The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it.

(PSALM 37:34) Hope in Jehovah and keep his way, And he will exalt you to take possession of the earth. When the wicked ones are cut off, you will see [it].

Join the two scriptures and you have a future in the flesh without death ON THE EARTH. But only for the righteous...those who are obedient to God.

People that fear death shows that they know their sins are not yet forgiven.. Yes they know the existance of heaven but also hell

They fear they may most likely fall to hell instead of heaven..

They never practised true religion in seeking God.

They just have a form of religion to apeace their conscience

It is one of the key attractions of religion that one must give up their rational sense of the world of a beginning of our life and an end, in order to cheat death eternally. Atheists face reality and decide that death is inevitable and that a painful illness is far worse than death itself, we see that eternity is not nearly as attractive as presented and that even if we did long to cheat death, it would not make it possible. With this knowledge we focus more on life and the wonderful genetic lottery we have won to be here and make every precious year of it worth living.

Many religious people fear that they haven't lived their life exactly the way God wanted to (which is probably good, because I'm sure a lot of them don't), so they fear that they will face eternal damnation over some of the most menial things. Personally, I don't think God is that meticulous.

Ask the suicide bombers. Do they fear death? No. Not at all. Not even the tiniest bit. I'd say they are the least death-fearing people on the planet.

I personally don't fear death, just the pain of dying.

Are you sure that's not just a conclusion based on the fact that religious people believe in an afterlife?

I am a christian and i dont fear death, i dont want to die like everyone else because of who we leave behind, but i know that when i die, i will be in the presence of God, for the bible tells me this, but it also says that sin will keep you out of heaven, and also God says he that says he is without sin is a liar, beacause we have all sinned, " For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God", but God has made a way out for us he provided his Son the Lord Jesus he gave his life and shed his blood for us so that if we confess our sins to Him, we CAN have them forgiven and go to heaven when we die, "For by Grace are ye saved, that not of yourselves but it is the gift of God", "If ye shall confess with thy mouth the lord Jesus and say in they heart that God hath raised him from the dead ye shall be saved". Jesus said when he was on earth, "In my fathers house are many mansions, if it were not so i would of told you, but i go away to prepare a place for you, that where i will be you shall be also" in the book of Revelation it tells us that heaven has streets made of Gold, the bible also says that if your name is not written in God's book of life you will not go to heaven, IS YOUR NAME WRITEN THERE?
