Why do people think they have 14 days grace to pay their road tax?
You get a reminder at least 14 days BEFORE the tax runs out. You have plenty of time to get it sorted before it is due.
In the U.K. there has NEVER been 14 days grace period for road tax - it's just a myth.

There never was a "grace period" that's a myth. It used to be that DVLA (or their predecessors, more accurately,) just didn't bother with chasing up those only a couple of weeks out of date. In those days, a policeman spotting an out-of date tax disk had to write out a report and send it off to the motor taxation people.

Should get your new Tax Disc BEFORE the old one runs out. Your reminder is sent to help you do that!!! Officially you should not drive you car or park on a road without a valid tax disc....you need to get it done first thing in the morning. Buying it on-line will not help as you have to buy before your old one runs out and also allow a few extra days for the post to deliver it.

Technically you're illegal as you are not displaying a valid disk. Practically provided you do it soon, certainly within the 14 days, and tax it from 01/12 you shouldn't have any problem. The 14 days are there so that there isn't a last minute rush with everybody trying to renew at once.

There never was a 14 day grace period. You shold get to the post office as soon as possible or get somebody to do it for you. The web site is desiged for you to do it in advance and it will be posted to your house but you need to do it as soon as you get the reminder through the post.

there never has been legally a 14 day grace, it marks back to the days when there were few post offices and the post office(mail) was not as wide spread as it is today,it was purely used as a courtesy period.
Now, with all the methods of payment that courtesy period can no longer be given as an excuse.(UK only)
