They say either clenching your buttocks together or having a tack in your shoe are the two main ways to pass a lie detector test but neither is fool-proof. The alleged technique is to have the tack under your toes and when lying press down on the tack which somehow gives off a different reading - BUT ONLY WHEN LYING - if you press down non-stop, firstly the investigator will probably start wondering about the small pool of blood collecting around your foot and also wonder why the readings will be all over the place. This is why some investigators insist doing tests with the subject's shoes off or having their feet on a pressure sensitive pad. The same technique applies to the clenching your butt technique, squeeze when lying. The same goes that some investigators insist the subject sit on a pressure sensitive pad, etc. but that's fairly unusual. As I said, I don't know if either of these techniques work - this is just stuff I have heard from people who have undergone lie detector tests and passed them whilst lying. Hope it's been some help anyways.

Lie detectors measure your heart rate. Signs of your heart rate speeding up would mean you're getting nervous, generally, and as such, would report a lie.

If you are trained so that your heart doesn't skip a beat, or speed up its beating, you could pass a lie detector test. You'd probably have to be trained under a special military for that. But also, if you don't take a lie detector test, cops can actually look for body language. Of course, body language doesn't always show a person's motive, but it possibly will help detect lying.

There are two ways to "pass" a lie detector test. Tell the truth.

Second you can be a sociopath. A lie detector measures the physiology changes your body goes thru when the brain says something it knows is a lie. You sweat, your pulse quickens, BP goes up.

A sociopath can convince his brain that what he does or says is not a lie. Conversely, someone about to loose control of their emotions will disply erratic physical replies no matter how true the answer it.

That's is why they are not reliable measures of truthfulness.

The machine detects physiological changes in your body when you lie. For example, your heart rate, your blood pressure, your breathing pattern, etc. Most examiners are trained to note when you change or appear to be trying to control your breathing, if you are moving your feet or toes, etc. The rumor of a tack in your shoe and clinching your butt has always been out there, but the same thing, they are trained to watch for that and will point out any unusual body movements to you while they give the test. Therefore if you do it again they will either stop the test or by mentioning it to you it will again result in you reacting by negativly because you know you're trying to cheat. Therefore you will give off the same physiological changes as lying.

In theory you would have to convince yourself that what you are lying about is not a lie. If you make yourself believe that you aren't lying, I guess you could beat it. But good luck with that. How about just be honest?

They work because you think they work. The Second in Command of the CIA, Aldritch Ames, was a Russian Spy. They never caught him with lie detectors, and he took dozens. The KGB told him to get a good night's sleep and just relax and stay calm when he took the test. They caught Ames because his taxes looked funny, not because he ever failed a polygraph.

I heard you can get a false reading if you suffer from anxiety or panic attacks. I believe it would appear as though your lying when your telling the truth.

On the other hand, I think the only way you could pass while your lying is if you truly believe your lie, and think your telling the truth. I think some people are capable of doing that.

Easiest way is don't lie.

They monitor heartbeat, breathing, and electrical discharge from nerves. Most people when they lie, have increases in all these areas. Some, notable, pathological liars, can pass these tests because they answer without giving a second thought to the questions.

Seen somebody put a tack in there shoe. When they were asked a question the truthfully answered, they stepped on the tack which would cause a reaction supposedly like that of a lie. (Think I saw it in a movie so it probably doesn't work).

Umm... tell the truth?

They go by your blood pulse. Firstly they hook you up and then take your blood pulse. When you lie, your pulse goes up and then it buzzes. If you don't, it does nothing, or in some cases I think it dings.

Hope that helped.

Edit:
Why the hell is this in law enforcement and police?? That's not the only thing they use them for lol
