There is no cracks or creases for prisoners to hide contraband. with the old seats you would have to lift up the seat and check, now you can just look back there. Plus they are easier to clean.

Some police cars have vinyl back seats and some have plastic molded seats, but no leather. The reason for the molded plastic seats is to make it easiers to clean and prevent the prisoners from concealing weapons or drugs in the back seat. Vinyl is cheaper and come standard with the cars, so most police departments keep them.

At least in my city, the newer ones are all made now with plastic starting about 2004 I think. The molded plastic ones are easier to clean and there are no spots for the criminal riding in the back to hide drugs missed in a search.

Hauling drunks and junkies that might **** on themselves or toss their cookies for starters; plastic covered seats are easier to hose down than a fabric seat; same goes for vinyl.

Imagine you being the patrolman that has to hose down the back end of your cruiser after hauling a shift's worth of belligerent drunks that are cursing at you and before the night is over, at least one of them will leave their dinner in the floormats.

Yeah! Not a nice thing to look at while you are hosing the squad car clean.

You can use a fire hose to clean out the plastic seat. Cars equipped with plastic tend to transport more inebriates and off the street arrests.

Plastic as in vinyl? I'm guessing it has to do with budgets and the cars they are able to purchase. Although plastic is probably better off for drunks.

Do you know what happens in the backseat of a patrol car? Nothing pretty. Plastic is a lot easier to hose down.

Easier to clean, more durable, all together a better idea. We use them and they work great. No creases or cracks for puke etc... to get in. Just open the doors and hose them out.
