I went to MEPS in 2002 and was disqualified because I admitted to having childhood asthma.

I am set on joining the military and at 33 have not had a breathing episode since I was 9 years old even though I am physically active.

How long does the military keep these medical records? I am hoping to find a new recruiter and not mention my childhood astma if I can find a way to get away with it.

I know that after 2 years a new physical is required, but does that mean that they do not have older records or simply that they need a more current physical?

Doesn't work that way, your record is either physically still there or is still flagged in the computer. I went to MEPS for the Coast Guard and then changed my mind and 10 years later went back to MEPS with the Navy and they wanted to know what the circumstances were with my Coast Guard application. You can't avoid it by changing recruiters OR MEPS locations, your SSN is in the DOD/MEPS data base.

Why don't you go talk to a recruiter honestly and tell them what happened last time. They should be able to help you and process a medical waiver for you. ALWAYS tell the truth. Every person in the military has something that needed special attention prior to enlisting so by telling the truth to your recruiter and working on a waiver you should be able to enlist with a little hard work in the paperwork area.

Asthma after the 13th birthday is disqualifying. Since you say you have not had asthma since age 9, I don't understand why you were disqualified in the first place.
The danger you face in withholding this information before your new physical is the possibility of an exercise-induced asthmatic episode in your initial training. That would put you in some degree of respiratory compromise. Sorry. But something isn't ringing true here.

Honest I am not sure , You could always call MEPS directly, though they may not tell you anything.. I went to MEPS in 06 when I enlisted in the Guard and well I decided to go Active duty though my Physical is still good (2 yrs) , my recruiter wanted me to re-physical again but the MEPS here said the one I had from 06 was still good, I gave them a copy from my AKO medical file but they needed it Certified , needless to say my recruiter didnt bother so I had to re-do my physical.

Honest I am not sure if they keep them ,destroy them, or send them someplace else.. call the MEPS you were at speak to I assume the Army Liason and tell them when you were there last and you wanted to know if they still have your records or how to obtain a copy... if that fails find a good recruiter just be honest with him or her.
Good luck to you!!

Its not MEPS, when your new recruiter types in your social all of your previous record will be shown to him/her. Although they do delete records so give it a try Asthma after age 12 is disqualifying so if you can provide documentation from a doctor stating you haven't had an episode since age 12 you should be fine.

I agree with you on the lieing part, but if anything its too late now. When you're going to lie about medical records you keep them between yourself and your doctor. There are thousands upon thousands of doctors and clinics where you could've had any number of medical conditions such as back surgery and such, thats why they grill you to tell the truth and intimidate you to tell the truth. How can they find something if they don't know what they're looking for? But now your back surgery is in Department of Defense records and if they find out you lied, oh boy thats Dishonorable Discharge and Federal Prison term.

The Military keeps everything forever.
Just because they ask for a new one, it doesn't mean they can't find the old. They just want to see if there are any changes.
The archives are in St Louis, and every scrap of paper concerning you is there.

I don't think MEPS keeps your records, because I had to redo everything when I reenlisted after being out for over 2 years. So, you should be good to go.
