Liquor stores in Cali offer specialty items you can't get in a grocery store (creme de menthe or johnny blue label for instance)

Liquor stores cater to an interesting customer base. Lazy college kids who dont want to go all the way to the super market. People without cars. People who are too drunk to drive to a supermarket but think they can make it to the liqour store. Liqour stores also tend to carry an excellent deal on one or two particular products and if you have some local knowledge its possibel to actually save money by going to the liqour store. Most liqour stores are also within walking distance of large populations thus allowing already impaired folks to make more bad choices... like paying 3 dollars for a 22

Supply and demand. There are not always grocery stores everywhere, especially in the ghettos where the grocery stors sell food and the liquor stores sell liquor.

Plus, there are more liquor stores than there are grocery stores. I guess more people want to drink than eat.

I guess it is just legal to do so there. Other parts of the country don't have that. I have even been to a county that is bone dry(NC). I live in nys and hard liquor is only sold in liquor stores only. counties and states have the right to adjust where and when liquor is sold. even counties have the right to mandate. businesses have to get liquor licenses and are required to follow the laws that are for their local.

In California one may only buy spirits between the hours of 6am and 2am regardless of the hours the store may keep. It's not just a good idea, it's the law.
