You can delete it the usual way. Go to control panel>add/remove programs, and uninstall it from there.

Okay. Simple, if you have windows XP, on the lower left, u see the green start button.Click on that. The u will see a list of a list of things, click on Control panel. Then, u get another list, and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then, wait for the list to appear, find Windows Messenger, and click delete.
All done! I got rid of it too.. I hardly ever use it, I like yahoo so much better, and Windows messenger, take up too much space on the computer. My computer ran so much faster, when I removed it.
Simply : start button>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>windows messenger.

Go to Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs then click on the third ICON on the left hand side of the screen (Add/Remove Windows Components). When the list of Windows components appears, scroll right to the bottom to deselect Windows Messenger.

if you are referring to Windows Messenger and NOT MSN Messenger than you cannot remove it without using some type of third-party remover. Windows is designed so that you cannot removed. If it keeps starting up when your computer starts, you can go up to Tools and Options. (I think). Somewhere under Options you can uncheck a box that says open when the computer starts and click OK.
You can also sort of "hide" Windows Messenger. Open Add/Remove Programs and choose Windows Components. Somewhere in there you will find Windows Messenger. You want to uncheck that option. It does not actually remove the program but you won't know that it's there because what it does is remove the shortcuts (you'll see the explanation when you're unchecking the box)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Now if you are referring to MSN Messenger then open up Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel. Find MSN Messenger in the list and click Uninstall.

To permanently delete it, 1st click on the Start thing, bottom left (:
Then when the long thing pops up, click on the thing that says "Set program access and defaults"
When the new window pops up, you wait till it loads then you click on the thing on the left that says "Add/Remove windows components"
Then you make sure there's only a check next to the windows messenger icon, and then click next for it to get deleted (:

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

If you prefer to remove Windows Messenger manually, click Start, Run and enter the following command:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Note: This will prevent a long delay when opening Outlook Express if you have the Contacts pane enabled. To prevent this, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
Software\
Microsoft\
Outlook Express
Right click in the right pane and select New, Dword value. Give it the name Hide Messenger Double click this new entry and set the value to 2.
