I have a 2 year old black lab/doberman mix who is really sweet and really well-behaved. The ONLY thing I cannot break him of is going into the kitchen and getting into the trash. Any ideas on how I can do this? I've tried just telling him "no", but as soon as my back is turned he's trying to get in there.
I have no idea what else to do. He listens to no for everything else, but the lure of the trash is too much for him.

We tried the pepper/hot sauce trick... apparently I have the only dog who thinks tabasco is the best condiment ever. Hot things are no deterrent for him.

Also, I live in South Korea so there's no Petco or Petsmart... there aren't that many pet stores in general so it's hard to find the sprays or even a dog proof trashcan.

The easiest answer, is not to put things in the garbage that the dog is likely to go after. If you can't put the garbage can away, and you can't keep it covered so that he can't get in.. When you have chicken bones or whatever.. left over after dinner, wrap it up and get it out of the house, and into a locked container outside.

I agree with alias boxer, you need to get a trash can with a lid, and weight it down. Also, have you tried sound diversion? Loud noises usually help after a few times, and if she's only getting into the trash when you're not home, you can buy an alarm (a cheap one, of course) that detects movement and will briefly play a loud sound when she tries to tip it. There's also a spray that you can put on the trash can, which dogs find unappealing and it should keep her away, though there's no guarantee.

Mix a little cayenne pepper with some water, and spray your trash can with it. Dogs hate that smell and he'll keep away.
EDIT: Hmm, hot sauce didn't work? You could try going through a few different types of peppers to make sure there isn't one of them that he really hates. I've heard cayenne works the best. Also, Febreze makes a carpet spray that is supposed to get rid of pet odors. For some reason my basset HATES the smell of that stuff, so much that I can't use it in the house or she'll make a fuss, sneezing and shaking her head and stuff. The other Febrezes are fine with her, but just the Pet Odor one she hates. Maybe it has a deterent in it to keep dogs from going on that spot again? You could try that.
A trash can with a tightly sealed lid (like the ones you have to step on a pedal to open) might keep him out, even if it isn't marketed as "doggy proof."

Get a trash can with a lid on it to make it harder for him to knock over the can and dig through it. I know stainless steel trash cans with a foot pedal that lifts the lid would be really hard for a dog to knock over and get into.
As a back up, get one of those click-it type clips, and clip the trash bag closed when you're not working in the kitchen.
You can also put some of that bitter apple stuff on on the outside, where he might touch it, if he still tried to get into it. Bitter apple is safe. You can get it at the pet store. It's really most useful to stop chewing, but you might even set up a trap for him, with your current trash can, and put the bitter apple on some things in the top of the can. See if he is put off from the bitter apple.

Problem: And it can be hard to cure.
1) you may need to claim the kitchen as yours, block him from coming into the room with your body, point a finger at him and do a noise, (no, or shush), Make him stay out of the room. If he tries to come in block him with your body, the pointed finger and the noise. Stay with it. He Will fast learn that you have claimed that room. This has to be a forever rule
2) put a trash can with a lid that you can attach a buzzer. He will have to punch it and get the noise and usually they will back off. It normally doesn't take much of the noise for them to learn not to touch.
3) teach him not to eat foods unless you tell him it is OK. Put something on the floor and block him for getting it, with a word or noise and hand signal and block with your body. Leave the food in the floor and keep him away from it with just the block technique. You can later pick it up and give it to him.
Later put down something to eat again and block him from it using the same techniques you used before. He can learn he can have only what you give him.

Unless your dogs a rare breed who likes jalapenos.. I've found this works to keep dogs from eating off the table. Try using jalapenos around the top of the trash.. the next time he tries to eat from that stash he'll be wishing he hadn't.
When he realizes the trash now holds something he doesn't want, maybe he won't want it anymore?

VERY LIGHTLY sprinkle it with ammonia. Just a light sprinkle will not make the area smell of those fumes, but it will keep the animals away. When we used to live in a place where we had to keep the trash outdoors (and not want to have raccoons or other nocturnal wild animals breaking into our trash), we would just put several drops of ammonia in it. I still do that indoors (because we have 2 dogs) and neither of them go near it.

Here's what I had to do...
Buy a small enough trashcan to fit under the sink and get the childproof locks for the cabinet doors. That is the ONLY way I can keep these two animals from scavenging through the trash. Yes, I have to empty it more often, but it is worth it to not have to pick up trash and a ripped bag all around my kitchen and dining room!
