The ps3 is definatly worth the money. You get a much better console with the ability to play blueray, go online for free, bluetooth accessories and people always forget to mention folding home which uses your ps3 console's processing power to like cure diseases.
I don't think it has any problems with overheating (here's an article on how tough the ps3 is http://www.ps3vault.com/how-to-kill-a-ps3-console-1975). I havent' ever had any problems with freezing or any other problems with mine.
You can play ps2 games on the 20GB, 60GB and 80GB. But there is a 40GB model that can't play ps2 games so just check with the place your buying. Not all ps2 games are compatible yet but this number is getting greater with more firmware updates.
My opinion go with the ps3 they're a superior console to the 360 and the failure rate is something like .2% and the 360 has a failure rate of something like 33% acording to some sources. The wii is ok but doesn't have the power of the ps3 or 360. It is fun to play with the wii controller but the ps3's control also has a tilt sensor similar to wii's control. The ps3 may be a little more expensive but it's worth it.
Hope this has helped...

well one yes it is worth the money it has free online play and next year when ps3 home comes out it will be BETTER than the xbox live, also it never has had overheating problems that is the xbox, and to stop that with the xbox you have to buy a $100 external fan that is really noisy.

the only problems with freezing is when u have a HDMI cable plugged in then you have to unplug it for 5secs and plug it back in and it is fine, this also only happens to 0.02 percent of ps3s.

only 80gb and 60gb can play ps2 games but the 60gb is beeter for it because it has backward compatibility built into the harddrive hand with the 80gb you have to download software. with the 40gb you can only play ps1 and PSX games no ps2 games.

i am a proud owner of a 60gb ps3 and i have to say it is great and is more than i expect it to be.
if i were you id chuck it on you CHRISTMAS LIST NOW!
