No. Sugar contains no fat and is low in calories. However, it contributes to weight gain if you don't burn off the carbohydrates contained in it (sugar is high in carbs). Carbohydrates convert to fat if not burned off.

excessive sugar consumption combined with an insufficient amount of high intensity exercise leads to insulin resistance (IS) in the muscle cell. when IS decreases lower and lower fat storage can be the only end result. muscle cells (myocytes) become resistance to the effects of insulin but fat cells (adipocytes) do not. insulin is a storage hormone that helps to metabolize nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and fats) and stores the excess.

any sugar or carbohydrate that is turned into sugar in you body will be stored as fat unless you´re doing an activity ( a sweaty one ). once glucose in found in body, your pancreas will produce insulin which inhibits your cell to burn calories because it is too busy storing it in your fat cells.
