A lesser penalty will be meted to the first time offender. A warning will be sufficient to warn the offender not to commit the same offense again.

RE:
What Are The Types Of Probation For 1st Time Offenses Of Shoplifting?
Alot of people have told me it is some probation, or restitution. What is the actual punishment for an 18 year old adult for a first time offense of shoplifting?

Ideally, the judge would like to see that you have done something to change your ways. For example, take a course in how to change, or anger management. You should write an essay (at least 2000 words) on why it is wrong to shoplift...something that you really have to think about...perhaps the impact that theft has on individuals or stores. Writing a letter to the manager of the store, apologizing for what you did and including a copy of the essay would be good.
In Ontario, when it is your first offense, and you are under 18, they sometimes recommend;
1) a certain number of hours of supervised community service work (could be 100 hours),
2) a letter of apology to the victim (or store manager)
3) The completion of a course that should help the person learn a better way of living.
All of these would have to be successfully completed within a certain time frame, or the thief could end up getting a record and being detained.
I am not sure how adults are treated, but any attempt to show remorse in a real way..making it up to the store or apologizing is an effort.
Make sure you speak to a lawyer beforehand (Perhaps you can negotiate a reduced sentence or conditional discharge if in return, you do community service work so that it won't show as a conviction on your record). Without someone speaking on your behalf, you could possibly end up in jail. Whatever you do, do not wear jeans and a t-shirt to court!!! Show respect for the court...dress clothes or neat and clean trousers or skirt, no tennis shoes, and no baseball hats!! You address the judge as "your honour"... that is his/her title. When asked a question, "yes / no your honour" or "sir".
I hope this helps you and I hope that you will never steal again.

I've been in your shoes, although as a minor. My friend who was with me and an accomplce was 19 though. We both had perfect records up to that point. We had to go to court. Their were no lawyers involved in our case, just a magistrate type judge we had to go in front of. My friend ended up paying like a $300 fine. I got fined $150 and got put on probabtion. Also, part of my probation was that if I did not graduate from high school they would bring me back and charge me with more. Or something like that? I hated school and apparently they found that out. It was a good thing probably, because I may not have graduated from high school. Then 3 years later I even went to college and got a degree!

LOL don't be fooled there does not have to be probation for your first offense. you can be put right in jail. depends on the severity and also the judge you have. it also depends on what you did and said when you get caught. also if you try and run or lie. Also depends on the store and how strict they are with their forcing prosecution. if you do get probation that is totally up to the judge and could range from being banned from that store, community service, restitution, mandatory volunteering or anything else the judge wants.

It really depends on what you stole if it was a
CD nothing much , a set of clothe maybe pay it
back & some probation time so it really has to
do with the value of what ever you took.

Community Service and Probation. But if you stole a lot and have other things on your record could be some jail time.

It differs for every single person. In California, you will most likely be fined and placed on probation for about 3 years.

Depends on what you took and what state you live in. And if you have a good lawyer.
My friend who has a friend in his 30's stole from a store for the first time and only received a fine of $10.00 and had to write a letter of apologize to the manager of the store department he stole from. Also he is not allowed to enter the store for one year. What he took was under $6.00.
Good luck with the rest of answers.
