Willingness to help at personal cost can not be explained by the Darwinian model. Yet it occurs over and over again. Yes, it is true that many kindnesses can be self serving or even benefit society as a whole. But "survival of the fittest" excludes the type of altruism that is of no benefit to the one showing it and could perhaps even put that ones life and well being at risk. We call such people heroes when we hear of their deeds.
The article mentioned above by novangel defines an altruist as "an individual who decreases his own genetic fitness to increase the fitness of another." This does not solve the problem of survival of the fittest since most human kindness does no such thing.
EDIT:
The very next question I clicked seems to relate somewhat to this one. Why would most people find this type of reasoning repulsive or offensive? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Akz4hRzmctK0EmggaBS6BiPd7BR.;_ylv=3?qid=20071202035211AA3Qj83

"Some people sacrificially give of themselves to those who are outside their group and with whom they have absolutely nothing in common" this is a quote from last Sunday's WT study which goes against the group cohesive societies mentioned. An example would be how the American Indians treated the first settlers in North and South America.
Often this God given humanness is warped by outside influences that appeal to the negative (sinful) side of mankind such as was the case in Germany, and of course military personnel are taught to be cruel, how else could they kill another human?
Edit: To echo Baby Doll, the kindness shown by the American Indians turned out to be a detriment to their society in that they were enslaved, so kindness does not foster evolution, it's a godly trait that does not look for reward.

Auto-evolution is where the problem is ; starting with auto-genesis ; life appearing spontaneously against all odds, and beating entropy ; then human beings descending from animals that do not have a soul ; the whole thing is a fairy tale for gullible adults ; a certain form of evolution can be observed in the order that God placed in Creation ; that is undeniable ; but the virulent unprovable theories that atheists are promoting are even less convincing the most far flung account of Genesis.

This doesn’t really pertain to your question, but I just thought of it when I read your question.
Because of Global Warming, the glaciers melting, and the destruction of the rain forests without replanting; I’m sure evolutionist are going to say that in a couple million years the human spices will once again have gills for oxygen to survive!!
Those who refuse to accept creation AND the Bible will find out real soon that they were tremendously wrong… “And YOU will have to know that I am Jehovah.” – Ezekiel 37:6

Empathy and Altruism are evolved instincts that can be found in all social mammals, and altruism can even be found in avians and some reptiles.
Yes, I can explain it.
In fact, evolution explains also why some people seem to lack empathy (sociopaths) and altruism (psychopaths).
The idea that God gave everyone a conscience cannot.
Do you deny that there are sociopaths and psychopaths out there?

Kindness is part of our social animal nature. All social animals express kindness towards one another.
However, look around. We do not seem to be filled only with kindness, either.

Sure, it's a survival mechanism. Empathy for each other helps the race to propagate.
Now, explain to me how "sin" got the magical power to fill us with hate, envy, etc.
I mean, if god didn't provide the means, then what did? Satan? So Satan can create stuff out of nothing just like god?

Altruism increases the fitness of a group. That problem was solved ages ago.

Who says I'm filled with kindness? Perhaps the next evolutionary step starts with me. :)

12 answers so far and they all seem to agree that those are traits that are beneficial to the evolution of humans otherwise we wouldn't have them. Guess it wasn't as hard as you thought.
