From my experience....
Well puppies like poop because it tastes good to them. This might be disgusting but whats good for us would sound disgusting to the dog. Keep your puppy alway from his poop. Dont let him eat it. If he begins to squeal or whine give him a chewy bone or a treat. Another reason this could be happening is because your dog isnt getting enough food. Since your dog is still a puppy they need to be fed 4-5 times a day or else they are hungry. Dont worry this is just a normal phase that most puppies go through. Just clean the area where he poops before he can start lol.. =)

I would add only a few suggestions to Twiztd D's answer... (I voted for hers as best answer)
1. Spray feces with a strong soap or detergent to make them unpalatable to the pup. Because training rewards her for going poop somewhere else, it doesn't always stop the dog from sneaking when you are not around (believe me, I have 4 dogs and each one of them has a guilty secret of sneaking a misbehavior no matter how much I train, reward, cajole, or punish) By making the feces taste like nasty soap, she may quit eatings feces altogether. A good coating of Palmolive original green detergent will do the trick.
2. If soap doesn't work, spray feces with Purple-Cap Lysol Disinfectant spray - the prettier the better, and see if she still eats them. If she does, feed her nothing but water for 24 hours. But again, pretty smells are pretty terrible to dogs, so making those feces smell and taste terrible will discourage your pup from going that route ever again.

Be sure and spray liberally each and every time. She probably wil taste it and spit it out, but Again, keep that area where she goes clean to reduce chances of sneaking on the sly.
Good luck. My dogs don't eat their poop, thankfully, but my garden on the other hand was a salad bar to my Rottweiler/Shepherd/Chow mix girl pups...

It's natural for dogs to eat their poop. There's nothing wrong with it. It's a puppy's habit to do these things.

I experienced the same thing when i had a puppy once. My puppy (god rest his soul) kept on eating his feces and he was already 2 years old!
I asked someone and he told i had nothing to worry about it. It was just animal nature.
I'm not so sure about this so i think you should ask a veterinarian.

cause it tastes good..seriously. Some dogs the food passes faster thru the digestive tract so it comes out tasting pretty much the same. There are things you can get from the vet to deter her from this. One is actually called Deter. You culd try a piece of pineapple too. it makes the poo taste bad. Other than that make sure she's on a GOOD puppy food, solid Gold, nutro, innova, wellness one of those...and just keep her away from it.

No, stool eating is NOT a normal behavior, and should NOT be encouraged - unless you want to get worms.

That's an extra couple of vet visits right there.

Dogs eat stool for the following reasons:
-They're lacking some nutrients in their diet
-Females by nature will clean up the area around them - they always clean up after their puppies
-They're hungry

You should teach a command such as "LEAVE IT" and make it a habit to clean up after your dog.

It's fairly common. Sometimes due to poor nutrition but not always. Put a tablespoon of pineapple in her food. It will make the poop taste bad and she will stop eating it.

She is a dog and that is what dogs do. That face you kiss is also the one she uses to lick her behind.

You can tell her no, and keep the lawn picked up. But to a dog, it's food. She can be taught with a watchful eye and she will probably outgrow the trend if she is well fed.

She isn't getting nutrients.

Try switching her to a good food. For now, try Canidae. When she is older though, switch her to Innova Evo.
