When you read Bible accounts of people who were resurrected, they still knew their family and friends. (Lazarus was in the tomb 4 days when Jesus came and resurrected him - John 11:17)
Solomon who wrote Ecclesiastes saw the vanity of trying to attain greatness in any way physically. No matter what we did, we would eventually be forgotten. Spiritual things were the most important to achieve.
Or perhaps your mom was thinking of Isaiah 65:17 where it says the 'former things will not be called to mind'. But it mentions that part after it talks about the new heavens and new earth. Today people can go through some bad things that can affect them for the rest of their lives. But, when the Kingdom we pray for in the Lord's Prayer is fulfilled, (and His will is done on EARTH as it is in heaven) we will have the life God intended in the first place when he created Adam and Eve. Isaiah 65: 21-25 describes the peacefulness at that time even with the animals. It will be a time when the wicked are no more and the righteous or meek will possess the earth and find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace "forever" Psalms 37:10,11&29.
If we study the Bible & find out what God's will is and do it, we have a wonderful hope to look forward to right here on the earth with our friends and family that we love.

The Bible says, "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is."

To many Christians, this means that when we die and are judged, during the last days, we will be like God in that there will be no sin in us anymore, neither the ability to sin. Also, we will have the 'mind' of God, in that we will know what He expects of us as we worship Him forever and become an active part of His plans for eternity.
Some people speculate that we will have the authority and creative power of God, as His sons and daughters, and that the universe will become a new 'testing ground' for all the creativity we have collectively. Even as God's Angels have specific jobs and responsibilities in His kingdom, we will be an integral part of Heaven and God's eternal plans.

Bottom line, means...the only things you'll forget are the sins you ever committed. "And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."

We will remember people though we may not see some of them again. We won't feel remorse at the loss of them, because God will wipe away all our tears...there will be no more reason for fear or bad thoughts. Our memories are part of what God loves about us. As individuals, we complete His intent and purpose for creating us in the first place...to love Him and worship Him by choice...and to have a relationship with Him. Without that, we'd just be drones doing everything that we're told to do (kind of like Angels, except for those who challenged God's authority!) God loves us and wants us to remain ourselves, but mixed with His intent and eternal glory and completely cleansed forever.

Yes, but I'm not sure if we will just not remember the ones who are lost. God will protect us from that pain. We will all be as the Angels are...we will be a family.

Ecclesiastes 1:11
There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

Revelation 21:4
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

If/when we go to heaven, our lives on earth won't matter, we will focus on the important things (God), and will have no worries or discomforts. As great as this life can be sometimes, heaven will be a million times better (beyond our comprehension), so that's why it's important to make sure you make it.

My father passed away and when I see him in Heaven I will know him but I will not recognize him as my father. We are and will all be a family with God as our Father.
Hope this helps.
