War is hell, getting shot at sure makes you think about your mortality, the thought that you could die any minute isn't a passing one, it's an ever present one when you are in that situation.

That being said: Getting shot at did scare the crap out of me, but it never made me think that a god exists either...nor did it make me wet my pants or call out for mommy, some guys did lose even bowel control, those guys were the ones who either left the battlefield as mental casualties or became THE guy you want in that foxhole with you.. All you give a shi.t about in a foxhole when the shooting starts is the competence of the guy next to you, not his religious affiliation, lack of it or anything else..

In Fact, the Highway of death only convinced me that even if there were a god, he doesn't give one crippled rat's as.s about mankind..

Francine is "Frank" and his post here shows who he is. Come out of the closet Frank, we don't care about your sexual orientation, Atheists are very tolerant as a general rule...

Is he trying to say that atheists are doers, whereas deists (those who believe in God) are hiders? History would seem to suggest that this is inaccurate. The fighters of the world, whether they are noble leaders, brave soldiers or tyrants have been both atheists and deists.
The expression 'there are no atheists in foxholes' was coined by those who believe that war forces those participating in it to believe in a higher power, whether out of fear, profound respect for the value of life, or because when you see death in front of your eyes you feel you have little to lose (who knows what's on the other side? There's no harm in believing after all?) I don't believe this is always true, but at least the expression makes sense.
I'm sorry but your boyfriend's doesn't.
I have been in war and I don't believe that anybody else who has could say this.

I'd say that, when the bullets are flying, it's not really the time to sit around and discuss anything other than what it takes to stay alive.

Well, that's of course if you're in a two-man fighting hole. If you're in a single, not much telling what you'd be doing. It's always better to go two-man.

That's what my atheist nephew and combat veteran says, too.

He used to laugh about the Christians wetting their pants and NOT praying, but calling out for Mommy when the combat began.

the comment originally meant that when people are faced with death they ask God for help.

there are people who don't believe in God and were in iraq with me. I can't speak for the moments leading up to the moment, but trust me that when i tell you, if you are not already thinking about God, when it flies apart, the many dozen thousands of things going on in your mind lead me to think, that a person who does not love God, will not think about asking for help.

a lot of things are happening very fast. Think of a car accident that just keeps going on and does not end. not multiple cars, the same car, the same people. it is ugly

I think your boyfriend missed the meaning of this saying.

However, having said that, I have to agree. Not hiding, fighting.

Well, people say that when you are faced with life or death situations, you begin to believe in God. There are serval reasons for this, one being that if you don't believe and you were wrong, you're going to hell.

This isn't always true, though, because people believe what they want to believe.

Interesting question.

my boyfriend, yeti, says there are no atheists in foxholes because soldiers tend to be patriots and patriots tend to be right-wing christians. he was never in the army, tho, so take it for what it's worth.

and really, are you people really so crass that you have to make gay jokes? aren't we past that level of ignorance [fundies excluded]?

my boyfriend can beat up your boyfriends any day of the week.
