2000 Mustang; am replacing head unit; no subwoofer; do i need an amplifier for the 4 car speakers? (6" by 8" if that matters)

It depends on the wattage of your stereo system and the speakers you got. My brother's Toyota Corolla stereo, for example only put out about 60 Watts, but he upgraded to a 230 Watt speaker system. He can only hear a fraction of his speakers' potential because he needs to get an amplifier that will boost the stereo's output.

Amplifier For Car Speakers

There was a time when a thirty watt per ch at eight ohm amp would have been considered quite adequate. Stock, most cars came with less. Save at the very high end. If your speakers are standard oval Rear Deck speakers, it probably still is. It might otherwise depend on the magnet and coil size, and compliance of the speakers, and probably, they are 4 ohm drivers, so 30 watts rms at 8 ohms usually outputs 60 watts of control to 4 ohm speakers. If you have typical oval deck speakers with say, eight ounce magnets on them, getting a whopping big amplifier wont do you any good. It just means when you twitch the volume control a little to far, you will turn the cones inside out, and ruin them. If your car is an ultra quiet veritable concert hall on wheels, a really expensive rig might, might, be worthwhile depending on your musical tastes. If you are just drowning out engine knock, keeping up with the sports, FM radio, I wouldn't bother.

Seems to me if you are Happy with the sound from your present system (speakers) then putting a amp in and over driving the speakers would cause a degrade in sound just more noise..... so if you want a better sound then replace the speakers. Save your hearing and go with quality sound and not loud noise. Your hearing can't be replaced and loud noise deteriorates hearing ... I know I worked around equipment and have lost my hearing. Sad when you can't hear your grand kids laughter.... Keep the shinny side up and the dirty side down

It really all depends on the speakers you're getting. Some you shouldn't put an amp on because their rated power handling isn't enough. Some speakers it's up to you whether or not you do. And, yet still, some will only sound their best with an amp hooked up.

But as far as do you need one, no speaker really needs an amp. It all depends on the speakers power handling capability and the users decision on whether or not they want to buy an amp for them.

Speakers are all about the sound. If you have bad speakers, an amp won't help anything. If anything, it would make the speakers sound worse. 110.00 is not much to buy four decent speakers or an amp unfortunately, especially if you are wanting installation as well.

if all you have in the car are the factory mids and highs you don't need an amp. All you need is a good head unit that has power and you're set. Some of the higher end models like Pioneer have built in preamps and equalizers which will give you the best sound quality.

Do you need one? That all depends. If your HU has a has only RCA outputs then, yes you will need an amplifier. If it has speaker level outputs from the built in amplifier on the HU, then, no you do not need an amplifier. I hope this helps.

No. If you are using the cars original speakers most head units come with more than enough power by themselves for standard speakers.
