Religion teaches codes of ethics and behaviors. It also promises eternal salvation for adhering to said codes of ethics and performing certain behaviors. The promise of salvation and knowing that you are serving the almighty creator of the universe can lead people to do things that in the absence of such beliefs they would not. For instance, flying a plane into a building, torturing heretics to extract confessions, crossing from Europe to Jerusalem to fight Muslims, burning witches, etc. Most religions have good ethical systems. Unfortunately they are often coupled with mythologies and power structures that lead to ideas such as the superiority of one faith or peoples over another, the immorality of others, and the need to convert or avoid people not of that religion. This, in turn, leads to zealotry and the atrocities described above.

Ummm... What crack are you on? Whoops I answered a question with a question. I mean come on. No one blames religion for something they do unless they are blaming religious people for shaping the quality of their life thus leading them to the actions that they perform.

I agree, people follow religion by choice, so they decide to do the things they do. A stupid religion may dictate what they do. (i.e blow up buildings with airplanes. stay with a husband who beats you) but they are the ones that is responsible when all is said & done.

From the Christian perspective, we are all sinners, in that we cannot attain the perfection of God.

"Religion", or better yet, the teachings of God via the Bible, merely point out the errors of our ways, so we can learn and move to a more godly set of behaviors.
