Whenever there are normal people getting together, I get panic attack because of social anxiety.

But whenever I see mentally retarded people, I'm scared of them. I don't want to touch them and I also don't want them to touch me. I feel like they are going to attack me or something.

What's wrong with me? if i'm scared of both normal and people with special need? what is that make me? even crazier or something?

I don't think it makes you even crazier. I don't think you're crazy in the first place, a LOT of people have social anxiety, and I think if you got a therapist you could work through that, but I don't think that's you're original question.

It is very typical for people to be a little weirded out by mentally retarded people. They are very misunderstood, and let's be honest--they're different. We grow up in a world that doesn't really like different and in a world that has only recently accepted those with mental disabilities as not being inferior. It's a pretty normal response to be frightened of people who are so different from us, and it's not just that they're different physically or socially, they're different in the MIND. The mind is such a mystery (even now) and we basically have a hard time trusting those that we sense are not 'right in the head'. It's the same with people who have a mental illness (trust me, I get it all the time, and I'm really a pretty normal gal), it's just the stigma.

If you have a therapist (which, like I said, you should--social anxiety is treatable) and he/she will be able to help you take steps to overcome this. However, if you don't run into a lot of mentally disabled people and don't have a panic attack when you see them, I don't see how it can be a real problem for you. Just don't be rude and don't freak out. If you spend some time around some, then yes, you'll need to work through that with a therapist slowly.

What is your definition of "normal" people? How can you tell just by looking at someone if they are "retarded" or "people with special needs"? It has been my experience that a lot of normal looking (?) people are really mentally unbalanced; yes, all the lights may be on, but nobody's home. Also, I've seen some pretty "goofy" looking people who are absolutely brilliant. You need to talk this out with a professional (don't rule out a member of the clergy). Sometimes the way to overcome a fear is by actually doing that which you are afraid of - you may be pleasantly surprised at what you learn. In any event, good luck and I do hope you work to overcome these fears.

im afraid of the mentally retarded as well. i wont let them touch me or touch anything i have touched or will touch and do not allow myself within a 2 foot radius. its terribly mean, but i cant help it either. im fine with normal people though. however, i have a phobia, you seem to have a personality disorder characterized by social anxiety and withdrawl, possibly schizoid personality disorder. i would seek psychiatric help.

Go to a doctor. They'll help you. Maybe if you make friends with the special needs people you wont feel so scared.

It may be that you are suffering from your subconcious past. Maybe you weren't developed well emotionally because you didn't get the nurturing that you needed from your parents or others. I suggest that you see Dr. Karen Kieffer. She specializes in therapy and dream enterpretation. Dreams really just reflect our subconcious desires or fears derived from our youth, and you can interpret them all by yourself if you're clever. Don't be fooled into going to see some witch doctor or somebody, though. They use magic, which is derived from demonic power and intrigue.

wow, I used to be the same way and you're not alone..I mean they can be very violent people..not because they want to..but I think I started to change when I realized God had put me around them for a reason..It was a gift they usually only trust certain people..and if there coming around you take care of them.

They are usually the most gentle of people. Go see a therapist to work through your issues.
