The Prophet’s Birth
Muhammad, son of Abdullah, son of Abdul Muttalib, of the tribe of Quraysh, was born in Makkah fifty-three years before the Hijrah. His father died before he was born, and he was protected first by his grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, and after his grandfather’s death, by his uncle Abu Talib.
As a young boy he traveled with his uncle in the merchants’ caravan to Syria, and some years afterwards made the same journey in the service of a wealthy widow named Khadijah. So faithfully did he transact the widow’s business, and so excellent was the report of his behavior, which she received from her old servant who had accompanied him, that she soon afterwards married her young agent; and the marriage proved a very happy one, though she was fifteen years older than he was. Throughout the twenty-six years of their life together he remained devoted to her; and after her death, when he took other wives he always mentioned her with the greatest love and reverence. This marriage gave him rank among the notables of Makkah, while his conduct earned for him the surname Al-Amin, the “trustworthy.”
The Hunafa
The Makkans claimed descent from Abraham through Isma`il and tradition stated that their temple, the Ka`bah, had been built by Abraham for the worship of the One God. It was still called the House of Allah, but the chief objects of worship here were a number of idols, which were called “daughters” of Allah and intercessors. The few who felt disgust at this idolatry, which had prevailed for centuries, longed for the religion of Abraham and tried to find out what had been its teaching. Such seekers of the truth were known as Hunafa (sing. Hanif), a word originally meaning “those who turn away” (from the existing idol-worship), but coming in the end to have the sense of “upright” or “by nature upright,” because such persons held the way of truth to be right conduct. These Hunafa did not form a community. They were the non-conformists of their day, each seeking truth by the light of his inner consciousness. Muhammad son of Abdullah became one of these.
PROPHET MUHAMMAD WASN'T AN IDOLIZER NOR A SLAVE, please bear that in mind, kayh (^_^)

RE:
What religion was the prophet Muhammad before he became a Muslim?
Muhammad's first wife was Christian. Was Muhammad also a Christian at some point in his lifetime?

My understanding is that Muhammad was raised to believe in the pure monotheism of Abraham, but this was not considered a form of Judaism because the Jews were a different ethnic group than the Arabs. (Although Biblical tradition holds that both Jews and Arabs were descended from Abraham, the two groups had become culturally different after centuries of separation from each other.)
I can't recall any reference to Christians living in Arabia at that time. I have never heard of Muhammad or Khadija (His first wife) being Christian until now.
The majority religion of the Arabs was a form of paganism. There were also a small minority of Arabs who believed in monotheism; I'm pretty sure they were called the Hanif. There were also groups of Jews living in the area.
I can't recall Muhammad having any interaction with Christians until many years later when some Muslims defected to Ethiopia, where Christianity was the state religion. I do believe Muhammad did have one Ethiopian Christian wife, but that was many years after the death of His first wife, Khadija. As far I can recall, Khadija also belonged to the Hanif or Arab monotheists.
There is no direct evidence that Muhammad or Khadija ever practiced idolatry.
I am recalling things I have read over years, and I might have a few facts mixed up, but I'm reasonably sure most of what I am saying is historically correct.

Muhammad (saw) was a Hanif or Arab monotheist who believed in Abraham (as), his sons Ishmael (as) and Isaac (as) as prophets and their ancestors and the One God that they believed in. Also, majority of people were pagans, not Christians. There were some Christians, Jews, and Hanifs but all in the minority and Muhammad's (saw) tribe, clan, and family specifically were majority pagan. About following the laws of previous prophets though, he did take whatever guidance he could from the Torah before the Quran came and while it was being revealed, whatever the Quran did not address yet, he would look to the Torah to address some matters. I hope this addresses your question.

He must have grown up with the belief of his parents/guardian as a young boy. Of course he had a past before becoming a prophet. The unanswered question is what was the belief of his parents/guardian while he was growing up. So many Buddhist and Hindus have better human relationship and appear even much godly than jews, christians amd muslims. The law of conscience thus exsit for every human.

Okay this is the best i can do...
the majority of the Arab tribes followed traditional (polytheistic) religions although a few where Jewish or Christian. It is believed that they were easily swayed from their traditional beliefs as they were not very appealing:
1. no promise of an afterlife
2. offered no image of a human destiny and no role of the Arabs in it.
So when Islam was founded it did well in uniting all of the Arab tribes/states.
I can't find anywhere that tell of his exact religion as all the history of him is from scholars of Islam and they are more interested in his revelations and all that came after then how he was raised.
