I'm going to make a few assumptions.

The first one being, you downloaded a file called somethingorother.iso (the important part is the iso) that corresponds to an ubuntu cd. If this is the case, then I'm going to assume that you double clicked on it assuming it was some sort of a set up program.

The extension ISO is an image file the represents the physical layout of a cd. They're not meant to be double-clicked and ran like a set up program.

Instead you need a cd burner and software to burn the image to a disk. The iso will then contain the files that you need to install ubuntu.

Why can't you install it from within windows? Because the resulting disk that you burn is bootable and it has to run before windows starts. The installation process modifies your system quite a bit, so I would also recommend that you back up files just incase the setup messes up.

So if you manage to burn the iso, restart your computer then put the disk in while the boot process continues. Then the setup will start up and THEN you will be able to install Ubuntu.

This will modify your Master Boot Record to a new loader such as LILO, or GRUB (Ubuntu uses Grub) and after the install every time you turn your computer you have a choice as to what OS you want to boot.

So to recap my assumtions:
1) You downloaded an ISO file
2) you think it's a set up file that can be double clicked
3) You need a cd burner, a blank cd, and software that is able to burn an ISO file (Nero Burning ROM)

Ubuntu is an operating system -- it doesn't run under Windows 98. It can be a replacement for Windows 98, or you can run both Win98 and Ubuntu, but you'll have to partition your hard disk correctly if you don't have two hard disks installed. Normally you start your computer with the Ubuntu CD in the computer and this begins the installation process. Warning: Be sure you have all your files backed up first if you want to try because it will erase your data if you install to the Win98 partition.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

first you need to be able to boot from the cd rom, drive,

boot your system up. place the ubuntu cd in the drive, then restart the system, it will boot from the cd rom drive,,, play with the live cd, for a while,, you can run all the programs off the cd. you don't need to install it right away... get used to it before installing it... it will be slow running of the cd rom. but it will run

you will need at least 512 meg of ram in your computer to run ubuntu you will like it once you get used to it...

also do a web search for dual booting widows 98 and ubuntu

you don't install ubuntu on windows 98. ubuntu is a linux operating system. you install it on your computer, and it either replaces windows 98, or lets you choose wich one to run when you start up your computer.

to install ubuntu, just restart the computer while the ubuntu cd is still inside. if this doesn't work, go into your bios and set your boot sequence to boot from cd first.

Hi! I am working on setting up a old desktop to run both Ubuntu and W98 myself, and was searching for answers too! This forum thread talks about installing Ubuntu FIRST, then running W98 in a virtual box for security and compatibility reasons, hope it helps! :)
