I have a small breed puppy that shivers all the time, so I bought him a couple sweaters today. I've read mixed reviews about them online- some saying they're a great idea- others saying that they rub the puppy's hair and can be bad for them. I was wondering if any of you had any opinions on this?
He's a shih-tzu mix with fluffy hair.

Here's his picture to give you a better idea of what kind of hair he has:

It will only hurt their hair/fur if he wears it 24 hrs a day, it is good to put it on him when taking outside to walk in the cold months...in the house, have a little bed with a fluffy blanket so he can curl up on it, you'll see he wont shiver and shake in the hoiuse.......does he sleep with you, if so, take a light full pillow and make sure a pillow case is on it, at night when lights out to sleep, gently lay it on top of him, he will stay warn and sleep all night, dont worry if he gets too warm, he will come out from under it.....my one Schnauzer Demon since he was 8 wks old has slept with us, he is now 3 and sleeps on his pillow each night, if its really cold, he sneaks under the comforter and sleeps all night.........

Ahhh, doggie sweaters. I have minpins, and if they aren't wearing sweaters in the winter when they go outside, we have to follow them around the house to make sure they aren't peeing in the corners. As long as you are only putting the sweater on when dog is outside, it should be just fine. If the dog wears the sweater for a long time, it can irritate the skin and make the dog itch. You may want to investigate polar fleece, as it isn't quite so itchy. Whatever you do, don't get sucked into the boots thing!

I have a Bichonpoo (Bichon Frise and Toy Poodle) she has fluffy hair like your pup. I have put sweaters, t-shirts, jackets, sweatshirts, all kinds of pup clothing on her since she was 12 weeks old. She is 16 months old now. I have never had a problem. She loves to get dressed up and waits patiently for me to put her clothes on. It has never affected her hair. I only put clothes on her when she is going outside. I don't keep clothes on her in the house.

Like u,, I have read mixed reviews.. but I think in some cases they were referring to the arm and legs holes if they are too small..
just don't allow him/her to wear it 24/7 it is good.. to keep them warm,
and some dogs are just nervous all the time and shake, but if yours is from the cold it is a god idea
good luck, and happy holidays..

I have an 8 month old shi tzu and i put jackets on her to help keep her clean. If she gets wet, her hair goes frizzy and because of her light colour she gets dirty too quickly. Wearing her jackets keep her clean and dry so i think they are a good idea.

both of my papillons wear sweaters in the winter time. i have never had a problem with hair being rubbed off from them. just check your pup each day and make sure the arm holes arent rubbing.
