Ok guys, I have a stepmother that has been in trouble with the law, now she went to prison and did her time on parole and totally learned her lesson. Now every time she tries to get a job they tell her no because of this reason... I just need to know what your opinions are on this subject.. I mean don't you think they should at least give her a chance.. Oh ya she went to prison for drugs... But she is clean and sober now.. Please give me some help here...

You are looking at it from the WRONG perspective.

Imagine you are an employer.

You interview 12 different people for the job - all are qualified applicants.

Are you going to hire the person with a criminal history or are you going to hire someone without a criminal history?

As an employer - you are going to hire someone without a criminal history because as a business owner it makes more sense pick someone who is LESS of a chance of stealing, embezzling or somehow screwing over your business.

Do you see how it works now?

Your step mother would be better off learning a trade and starting her own company.

This is a consequence of what she did. As you may be aware, drug users often relapse, even with the best of intentions at first. There is a risk.
But I am sure that somebody will give her a chance. She should join a good support group like Narcotics Anonymous or even Alcoholics Anonymous; this would be a big help to her.
You too should join Alanon or Nar-Anon, because this will help you help her, and help you avoid the pitfalls of dealing with a recovering addict.

It is difficult to get employers to trust you after something like that. She can try talking to the workforce commission for placement. She can try getting on with a local family-owned business doing simple labor, like stocking shelves.

If she has business acumen, she can invent a means of making a living... perhaps doing handcrafts and selling them at local craft fairs, or doing yard work, dog-walking, baby-sitting or elder-sitting. She can probably offer to do people's holiday decorations right now.

She will have to get creative. The thing is, that anything will be something. Any small advance is good.

If she can build a series of references in this way, and get them to write letters of reference for her, then she can grow past this trouble.

I know it sucks but it is going to be hard for her. Someone out there will give her a chance she just can't give up and keep trying. K Good Luck and I hope everything works out for her :)

some crimes are harder to overcome than others.
i, personally, probably wouldn't hire her either.
sorry.
she may have paid her debt to society but i wouldn't be willing to take a risk on a drug offender. especially if money was involved.
for instance, would you be willing to have a sex offender, altho he has served his time in prison, take care of your minor children?
