Actually, they're alive and well.
I'm on about a dozen, of which half are slow-traffic, and the other half are high-volume. Were I not on digest, I'd get over a hundred emails most days. They're extremely effective at building networks for people with highly specialized interests. One of the yahoogroups in which I participate has roughly 1600 members worldwide. The groups I subscribe to are valuable forums for discussion and exchange of information, with dedicated list-hosts who weed out the spam, enforce civility and pertinence, and in general cultivate a high wheat-to-chaff ratio.

So utilising a million identity by dissimilar purchasers isn't an argument until injury the regulations...! yet dissimilar ids by a million guy or woman and abusing the community is a completely violation... So team of persons can use one single identity to take part in yahoo solutions... however the way of presentation is maximum extreme jointly as posting the question & answer... All could study the community guideliness...!

Yes I'm in about 20 or so - mostly for genealogy and the vast majority of those groups are very active, some with well over a thousand members.

I've joined a couple that deal with my favorite railroads (Baltimore and Ohio, Rock Island) and one for small churches. All of them seem pretty up-to-date to me, but there are slow periods, too.

We have one at work for all of us to network on, and I find it totally useless. I don't even bother myself with it anymore.
