I went to the pet store today, and I am getting guinea pigs for Christmas. They are so cute, and I absolutely love the noises they make. Anyways, I went in there, and I don't really like this pet store. It is stinky, and there are reptiles of all sorts, bearded dragons, snakes, geckos, ect. fish, birds, a large bird who really liked me once i started whistling at him. They also have finches, a chinchilla, rabbits, rats, mice, hamsters, and of course, guinea pigs.

Anyways, I went in there, and after a while, I noticed my nose felt like it was...burning? Like just a faint burning. Kind of like the feeling you get when you are trying to sneeze? But I didn't sneeze, nor did I threaten to sneeze at all. My eyes didn't itch or any other symptoms, and I really only noticed it after my dad started complaining that he must be allergic to something in the room.

Could I be allergic to any of those animals, or was it just my mind that made my nose sting like that?

Okay, people, I know everything about piggy care, so I am good on that. I was just asking if it was possible for my to have a reaction to them, which would stop me from getting them!

If you take a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day it will help your body develop immunities to all the air born irritants around you including pet dander, mold, smog, pollen and dust. If its in the air, its in the honey. It will not matter what you are or are not allergic to, it will keep you healthy naturally. You will also find that you get less cold and flu symptoms as well. Like all herbal remedies, it will take a while to become effective but it will be worth it.

You could have been having an allergic reaction; bu if the store was stinky, then maybe there was just something else in the environment that caused your reaction. At any rate, I would not buy from a pet store. They generally do not take very good care of their animals at all, and it would be better for you if you adopted your guinea from either an animal shelter or a guinea pig rescue group. This will serve two purposes. One, you will not give money to a negligent pet store....and two, it will help to make sure that you get an animal which is less likely to get sick and die on you.

It's actually a fairly rare person who's allergic to guinea pigs, but they ARE a huge amount of work to take care of. You also have to get at least two or else they get really lonely, and you have to have a few hours a week reserved for cage cleanings and time to let them run around. They need more care and bigger cages than most people realize, and they also breed like wildfire. Ergo, you should have a vet make sure that they are not going to be able to breed, Overpopulation is a big problem with guineas....there are far, far, far too many homeless ones....and they are also very delicate with a very high infant mortality rate. If you do end up getting guinea pigs, then PLEASE do not beed them.

BTW, the easiest way to find out if you are allergic to guineas is to hold one or two healthy ones for awhile to see if you have a reaction. ;)

There might've been something in the air in that pet store that caused you both irritation.
If the place looks like a mess, unsanitary even...don't get ur guinea pigs there, and definitely call a health inspector.
It might not have been an allergy but just the affect of a poorly kept facility.

It sounds like there was ammonia in the air from cages that needed to be cleaned. It may not be an allergy at all.
