I've worked at the local animal shelter for 2 years and I've discovered that:
*Cats generally like to scratch on posts covered in rope or carpet. A few cats like to scratch on cardboard.
*Most adult cats like catnip
*Cats like to lay on paper
*Cats like the crunchy sound of stiff cellophane.
So maybe if the sofa was comprised of rope/carpet with paper to lay on with catnip/cellophane stuffed in it... they might respond well to your sofa.
I would buy it if it worked.

Ha ha. Bless your heart.
Your cat will probably find your new leather jacket hanging in the coat closet and use that for scratching.
The idea of a sofa is worth a try though. It has to be placed high up. Cats like to survey and scratch from a vantage position.

It's most likely a yes to both your questions.
Cats will probably us it because they will learn to. If they get yelled at for scratching every thing else they will learn learn to use any old scratching post.
Also the consumers of today's markets spend a majority of their money on novelty items. I think they will find your product cute and funny and will buy it for their homes. That is if they have a cat.
Good luck, I think your product will do surprisingly well.

to be honest with you i wouldnt bother with the whole £2000 sofa thing, cats dont care if it looks like a £2000 sofa or a 20p beany bag.
ppl will by it but its up to the cat if they use it, some cats will go crazy some wont even look at it. if you do just make shure it is impregnated with catnip
good luck and make lots of money

i think if your going to design and manufacture anything it should be a sofa, bed every other furnishing for the house that for us humans can use my cats sleep everywhere but there beds, thery scratch everything but their scrating posts, thier favorite place is my wardrobe, but only after i have ironed all my black skirts, i think they have competions to see who can put the most cat hairs on my work clothes, and who can take up the most room on my bed when im tired. But at the moment thier favorate game is how many christmas presents can we unwrap after mummy has taken hours wrapping them, im going to put my tree up later bet its not up half an hour before i hear the baubels rolling around the floor with the cats chasing them, but i love them dearly and wouldnt have it any other way.
