you know in full house, prince of belair, sister sister, etc. they have laughing/cheering in the background from an audience? call me stupid, but is it real? like, are there actual people watching them? or is it just a machine or something?

Some are real. Some tv shows have a live audience. Some do not, and they just play audio clips of applause and laughter. Even some shows who do have a live audience signal for when they want applause or laughter.

Most of the 70s/80s shows that I watch will tell you at the end that "it was recorded before a live studio audience", as for shows now I don't know.

There is only one show I know of with real cheer and jeers, and one I am not sure of. The most honest show in my opinion was Rush Limbaugh Show, and the other show was Seinfeld… Top notch shows.
