Ali had matured a lot since the Liston fight. He was no longer the young fast fighter who zoomed past you at the speed of light. He was slower and he had to mentally prepare himself for the challenge of fighting a younger and very determined, hard punchng champion. I'd go for the Ali of the Foreman fight.

Ali, from the Liston fights until the enforced exile, was the greatest fighter that ever lived. A 215 pound Sugar Ray Robinson. That Ali wouldn't have needed the rope-a-dope to beat George.

Ali was smarter (therefore a better boxer) when he fought Foreman. He was a great boxer when he fought Liston, but not a better boxer in terms of really knowing how to win - even though he did.

liston fight. people say he was probably smarter and craftier by the foreman fight, and that is probably true.
