Well I would bet Marine basic today is a lot like Army basic I went through in 71.
be prepared to be yelled at a lot. be prepared to be tired, dirty, thirsty, and more.
But most important listen to every word those sergeants say, and i mean every single word.
You do not try to do everything, you simply DO everything you are told to do.
And fast? NO, its seems that way when its over, but it actually lasts a lifetime.

Brother are you in for a rude awakening!! When you arrive, do exactly as you are told, nothing else!! Speak only when spoken to by a D.I. !! (Loud & clear) Don't think! They will think for you! DO NOT look into the D.I.'s eyes, stare straight ahead at a object past the D.I. Do not say "I" or "You" (he will show you your eyes) and (do you know what a you is "EWE"(Female Sheep) The correct response would be "The recruit or the private", or "the drill instructor" You won't be able to do anything right when you arrive, no matter how hard you try, so just follow orders immediately, exactly as instructed, without hesitation and without question! And you will be ok. Start running as far and as much as possible, be ready to run 3-10 miles and more per day! (no b/s) sit ups, pull-ups, squat thrusts (bends& mutherf_ckers) Be ready for a mental assault, you will think you have made the biggist mistake of your life, but just hang in there, the first month is the WORST! It will get better,You will get better! If possible get your hands on a "Marine Corps Handbook" everything you'll need to know about the "Corps" is in there, Memorize the "General Orders" this is a must!! Knowing them before you arrive will be a BIG PLUS for you!! The more info you can pack into your head about the "Corps" the better off you will be, as you will attend many classes in M.C. History etc. So study up, there will be a test, every minute of every day!! You never know when they will walk up to you and ask a question, and you are expected to know the answer. If you screw up to much, everyone will pay for your mistake! That's when your trouble will start! so pay attention! If you can't swim, you better learn and quick!. Water survival is a s.o.b. if you're a weak swimmer!! And they don't have time to teach you!! Just remember everything they are doing is for a purpose, you won't understand at the time. Once you earn the right to wear the "Eagle, Globe & Anchor" No one can EVER take that away from you, it's yours forever! There is no such thing as an "EX-Marine" you will always BE a Marine, you are joining a "Brotherhood" it never goes away, you can't wash it off, it will be with you the rest of your life! And you will be my "Brother" SEMPER FI !!

Do everything the D.I's say (yell) as quickly as possible. No matter how fast you do it, it will always be too slow, and nothing will be done right. Just go with it. Don't worry about doing everything, that's not an option. You will do everything, just be quick and do it to the best of your ability.
Be very loud when responding to the D.I. This helps keep them off your back ( a little).
Be prepared to be tired, cold, wet. Don't worry about being scared. The culture shock and the pace at which the D.I's keep things moving, it will pass quickly.
Don't expect a nice reception when you get there. It will be rude and to the point. You will not get sleep for 24 hrs or more. SLEEP on the bus. Our driver warned us, but we didn't listen. Should have.
I hope you can eat fast. Everything is in alphabetical order. When at the chow hall the first man sits to eat, when he is done, the platoon is done. If your last name is in the last half of the alpha bet, eat fast, and eat it all.
Don't try to hit or swat any bug. They were there first and have more rights than you. Besides, they have to eat too.
You will walk quickly, and run a lot. You will carry your rifle everywhere. You will do more body weight exercises than you thought possible ( pull ups, push ups, leg raises, mountain climbers, monkey f***ers, ................ ) DO these now, and run. Ask your recruiter for an exercise chart, it will help.
In the end you are a worthless maggot with no rights. The D.I's will say things about you , your girlfriend, your family. IT IS NOT PERSONAL, they don't even know them. If you cry a couple times after lights out, don't feel bad. A lot of guys do, but remember, Marines don't cry, there eye balls sweat.
Everything you go through is temporary, once away from boot camp you are treated as a Marine. When they pin the EGA on you, that will be the proudest moment of your life.
If you need encouragement, or more info go to Leatherneck.com. Register as a Poole. That is a forum for Marines, former Marines, future Marines, and families of Marines. A great support for your parents while you are away.
I am on there as jrhd97.
Good luck!!

When u arrive at MCRD you will be shocked but keep in mind its to releave you of all your civilian habits and ways,u will be broke down from the get go you will feel stupid, clumsy, blind, and made to feel like the worst person the corp has ever seen or had, they will run u every where everything u do will be wrong you will puke at sometime or another and told to pick it up, if you do everything right and the DI see's this you will not like the outcome of this either. So put it in your mind to pay attention be strong do not ever give up and most important l mean important pay attention... As far as making it you can only be a Marine if you want to be a marine got it? Once you have been broke down molded to there standards you will be ONE... Yes get it good shape run alot but most important again get your mind right, mom can't help you no more only the corp can... And good luck be strong all the bad things will go away as you progress.

Hello im not sure what your interests are so I dont know what you would be doing in the Corps. but If your going to be in infantry then most likely youll be going to Iraq or Afghanistan and if thats the case then you should rap up any of the little things in life that youve always wanted to say or do to anyone. cuz later you might not have the chance. I wish you good luck and i commend your bravery.

One thing I wish I had done before I went in the Air Force was cut my own hair instead of waiting for them to do it!
