Pinot Noir and Merlot are the names of two different grape varietals. Pinots tend to be lighter and more delicate, and Merlots are more full bodied. Interestingly, since the film Sideways has come out the market has been flooded with cheap poorly made Pinots, but before it was flooded with bad Merlot. Both grapes can make wonderful wines.

Pinot noir is much lighter than the fuller bodied Merlot. Both are very tasty, however.
