no is not true... the only way you could get food poising from something with mayo is when it being siting out of the freeze for a day or two, then is not save to eat... remember mayo is make with milk and egg therefor it have to keep under cool temperature, but yes you could warm up something with mayo in it as long as it was in the freeze and not siting out.

The only way that warm mayo can kill is if it was allowed to breed bacteria. It doesn't take long. Just a few hours. If you warm something up in the oven you should be safe and if you use the microwave than any water-base lifeform is dead. That is why you shouldn't microwave yeast or yogurt. So you will be fine as long as you don't let the sun warm it up for you.

It won't kill you nor will it make you sick. Now, with that said, I'll tell you I have lots of recipes for casseroles that call for mayonnaise as an ingredient that is mixed with cream of chicken soup and baked in the oven. Got the recipe from my Great-Aunt who has been making that recipe for more than 40 years for her Garden Club, Bridge Club and Church and to date, not a soul has been sick from it.

I also put mayonnaise on my salmon that I bake in the oven. It keeps the moisture in the fish. And, I have made Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake and it was great and no one became ill.

As the others said, it isn't the heating of the mayonnaise that is a problem, it's the letting it sit out unrefrigerated for a long time. And as far as a long time goes - let me tell you all one more thing. When I was in Junior High School in the 60s in San Diego, California (pretty warm there), my mother would send us to school with bologna sandwiches, tuna fish sandwiches and egg salad sandwiches and those sandwiches stayed in our "unrefrigerated" lockers from the start of school until lunch time. We didn't have any way to keep our lunches cool so that old mayonnaise sat in that locker, in the California heat, for at least 4-5 hours and I never got sick from it. My mother also took her frozen meat out of the freezer in the morning and left it in the sick all day long to thaw (from like 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). At that time I was to cook it. And we didn't get sick from it. Now I know the bugs today are different than they were when I grew up, but it shows you the range of time can vary.

No... it's not true.

The concern is that if you made potato salad and left it in a warm car for a few hours. This would allow bacteria to grow and can get people sick.

In a microwave, you're heating and eating so bacteria don't have enough time to grow unless you leave it in the microwave for a few hours before eating.

a couple of things
Commercial mayo is made with pasteurized eggs which makes mayo pretty safe stuff
Most cases of food -borne illnesss involving mayo based salads are caused by mayo+ the protein ingredient in the salad -egg, chicken , tuna ..... with the protein food being the actual culprit.
High protein foods of course are a like source of food-borne illnes
In the unlikely event everything still went wrong the microwave's ability to rapidly get a product out of the danger zone further insures your safety
Enjoy your salad

Thats not true, it just loses its texture and becomes very liquidy and doesnt taste too good. Ive done it unintentionally many times and I havnt been poisoned. In any case Im sure too much of it may give you a sore stomach..But youll be fine dont worry.

P.s why did you heat up potato salade in the first place? Ive never had that heated..

No. That is not true. However, mayonaise is an ideal medium for growing bacteria. Bugs love that stuff. You can easily get food poisoning from eating food with mayonaise if you leave it unchilled too long.

No... leaving stuff with mayo on it for a long time at room temp can make you good and sick though. If you heat up mayo and then eat the food immediately afterwards you should be fine. He doesn't know what he is talking about.

No, think of how many hot burgers have mayo on them. If that were true, a whole lot more people would be dead right now.
