When we where tight on money I always used water and a table spoon or two of butter, then I always added pepper for flavor and it was ALWAYS just as good.

I assume you mean milk. And I usually do- though I like the effect of milk better with the cheese.

It will work, it will be kinda bland though. Maybe add some peas or something you have on hand.
