I'm writing a paper for catholic theology class and the prof. taught us that the Adam and Eve story was meant as a metaphor, but if that is true than where did humans' original sin and sinful nature come from. It doesn't make sense if god was supposed to have made everything good. help please???

God created this perfect angel called Micheal. He started talking behind God's back to the other angels, Micheal rebelled against God. Rebellion is sin. So God kicked him out of heaven, with 1/3 of the other angels. Micheal today is known as Satan or the devil. He brought sin into this world. But if you ask God He will give you power over sin. You choose.

If your asking why God didn't just destroy Micheal then I have your answer. If he did then the other angels would just follow him because they would be scared, that if they did something wrong, then God would destroy them. But he let us choose. He is loving, He wants people to really, truly believe in Him because of love. Not a threat.

Adam and Eve are truly the first human sinners when they disobeyed their Father--Satan, an angel, was the first to disobey, so he is considered the father of the lie and the originator of sin. Satan is so devious so as to have many, many fooled.
God is perfect. He created perfection, He could do no less than that. We were never meant to die. We die because of inherited sin because our first parents sinned before they became parents.
In the book of Genesis, chapters 1 through 4, we get the synopsis of the original sin and of the consequences of disobeying our Holy Creator. But, all is not lost, as Satan would have everyone believe. God holds out the promise to us, through His son, of everlasting life on earth and not in heaven as so many are falsely taught to believe.
God created the earth for man and man for the earth, so why would we want to go to heaven when perfection will be restored here once again after Satan and all wickedness is destroyed?
To study the Bible and get the true sense of it is not what the "world" teaches.
Remember, Jesus said "I am no part of this "world" because this worldly system belongs to Satan. God is going to take it back and restore it just as He promised. All in due time.
When the Witnesses have reached out to everyone on the globe and Jesus' words at Matt. 24: 14 come true, the end will come. Then will come the beginning of earth's restoration and peace will reign under Yahwah God's Kingdom in heaven, His heavenly government headed by His only-begotten son, Jesus Christ.

it is not a metaphor!!! to say that is to call God a liar. it is the sin of adam and eve that caused sin in mankind. it is that sin that started death. because death did not exist until they sinned. it makes me sick to think that the people who teach about God say foolish things like that. and God did make everything good, but it was Satan who liked to, and still likes to twist things so that man is against man and against God. so the original sin was the first act of disobedience to God and now we all have that same sinful nature within each of us. we are innocent while we are children and then sin takes hold of us somewhere in adolescence and we die spiritually, but only God truly knows when that takes place. and now only in Christ is all that made right again. that is why Jesus said in him you will not die (spiritually) but have everlasting life.

so sweety did this help you at all???

ADDITION: sorry laura r...i accidentally gave you a thumbs down when it was supposed to be a thumbs up...darn trigger finger!!!

The sin was not eating the apple, it was not listening to God law. He only gave one rule and everything else was there's. Everything was good fruit, veggies, even in harmony with the animals. Even when Jesus came he gave us a new Commandment and that was to "Love every one", we can't even follow this simple law that is why he Saint Paul Say's everyone is a sinner and falls short.

I’m not Catholic, but this is what I think:

Gen 1:26 -And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Gen 2:15 -And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it
Gen 3:1-6 -Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat
Before the serpent (Satan) entered the garden to temp man, God had given man dominion over the earth (Gen 1:26). That word dominion is a strong word. It implies that man (Adam) was second only to God. God gave man one commandment, not to eat of the tree of knowledge, and in God gave man (Adam) a job, to dress it and keep it (Gen 2:15). Now the serpent enters in and is successful twisting the truth to deceive Eve. Eve is tricked into eating the forbidden fruit and Adam is right there with her. The serpent didn’t speak to Adam; therefore Adam was disobedient to God for no reason. But I ask, see how Adam was more powerful than the serpent, if Adam had been doing his job, why did he allow the serpent to speak to and deceive Eve? Why didn’t he cast the serpent out of the garden? I conclude that not only was Adam disobedient, he was irresponsible. The “original sin” IMO, is the sin of omission. That is, not doing what is known to be right.
