I can't get a new computer..
but I'm looking for a media player that's not windows media player [it doesn't work on my computer] and one that doesn't freeze my computer. Itunes, winamp, and realplayer all freeze my computer.

Also, are there any other high quality instant messangers that support aim and its features? [like trillian, but that also freezes my computer]

I wish I could just buy a new computer but it's free to download! So please help. :)

Try VLC and Pidgin... or just upgrade to Linux:

http://www.ubuntu.com

Its free, works great on older hardware and it a fantastic way to breath some life back into a computer stuck with a 10-year old OS.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

VLC is a great media player and it is "open source"

If you are getting so many freeze-ups, there may be another underlying problem.

Need more RAM? Windoze 98 machines were not typically RAM-heavy.

Do you do the disk maintenance things like SCANDISK and DEFRAG? Do you keep your IE explorer cache small (80meg is really all it needs). Delete the contents of your TEMP directory (C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or C:\TEMP). Delete the contents of C:\WINDOWS\APPLOG.

While we're onthe topic, have you cleaned the inside of the case out recently? I'll bet that 10 year old computer is full of dust. Get all that accumulated dust out.

sounds like your low on ram, back in the day winamp ran just fine on Win 98, with 256 or less ram. if all these players are freezing your system up the ram must be low......

If this is the case your gonna need to beef up your ram a little bit more......good luck

try downloading a video coder for win 98, should be able to find one on the web.....

It sounds like you have the wrong video driver installed for your computer if it freezes when you try to play video. Install the right drivers and they all should work for you.
