Angle Eject. A standard Model 1894 ejects spent cases straight up; the AE kicks them off at an angle so as to allow a scope to be mounted directly above the receiver.

As you have already been advised it stands for Angle Eject. The Original Model 94 ejected straight up into the air, and usually backwards into the head or face of whomever was shooting the rifle to begin with. This also made mounting a Top Mount Scope impossible because the scope prevented the empty cartridges from being ejected (Straight Up). Winchester changed to the AE design to resolve this issue, and to make scope mounting possible, and at the same time, making the angle of ejection out to the side and away from the shooters face and head.....

Angle eject. They made it to accommodate scopes. My mom shot a pre-'64 model 94 with iron sights and when we tried to get her a scope for her birthday it was a a bear of a chore to find someone who could handle the top ejection. We did find someone, but the scope had to be mounted so high my mom wanted to go back to iron sights. She's 73 now and still pops one or two a year.

Like John R said. It stands for angle eject. What that means is that the cartridge won't come out of the top of the receiver like on older models., it comes out the side.

Sounds a little like a Scots patois dialect: "Get your three pound out for a Stella or go home"
