Yes . You had control of the can when you picked it up . It was your choice to litter.

there are so many questions hidden in it-
1- why u were walking?
2- which direction u were wlking?
3- size of the can not mentioned?
4- what time u were walking ?
5- were u alone when u were walking?
6- as it was can u threw it, if it were a gold coin would u throw
it away?
lastly
7- what was the color of the can?
with out knowing all the points it is not possible to decide the answer.

Yes.
If the can is on the street where it does NOT belong, it is considered to be litter.
since you put it there, by your own admission, I guess it has to be said "You littered".
Is it wrong if you DON'T pick it up?

Yes in deed, you picked it up and why through it back when you can throw it to the garbage can? When you hold a thing it means you possessed or it belongs to you...If you do not want to be cought littering never touch or dont mine what is in your surroundings...that if you dont care???

Yes! Once you take possession of the can, its yours. If you just want to read or look at litter, you will need to bend down to do it.
