Think disposables as tissues and long lasting as towels that can last 10 years given that you have taken the right steps to maintain them.

Generally speaking, as a consumer, which would you prefer and please explain. I know it is quite broad, but also list the pros of having, for example, rechargeable batteries and alkaline batteries.

Personally I prefer long-lasting for many reason depending on the object one is talking about.

One of the reasons that apply to almost anything I choose is, is it more Eco friendly. but onto my list...

Paper plates- the pros would be quick clean up, no dishes to wash.
The reasons I prefer dinnerware- One time cost for buying, wash time (if you share the duty) can be a time for exchanging information, your not killing trees for your plate.

Paper towels pros- you do not have to worry about washing them when you clean up things you'd really never want to see again. You don't have to worry about what else they may have been used on. Cons-they can get expensive
Cleaning Cloths pros- Washable/reusable. (To make sure I don't use the same cloth from the bathroom in the kitchen I have labeled my cleaning cloths: Dishes, Dusting, Bathroom and Counters) Con- when cleaning up something gross you have to then wash it right away.

Rechargeable batteries pros- you don't have to go out and buy new all the time, a good set hold the same charge as regular batteries. Cons- as they get older they tend to hold a lesser charge.

Those are just a few things. The main things I look at when deciding between long-lasting and disposable are will the long lasting be worth the up-keeping required (if any is required) and in the long run will it save me money. I hope this helped a little.

I prefer things that last except tissues. Then you don't have to keep buying and you save on your garbage bill.
Disposable things are good if you are traveling or only need it for a single use.
Take the dinner fork, my house has metal forks, I wash and reuse. I use metal at work but we keep plastic for when we have more people than forks. I use metal camping in the camper so a handful last years and I don't have to pack them. For a picnic in a park or to serve cake to 30 people when I only own 12 forks I would use plastic.
The same thing with paper plates if having a huge crowd I might use them because I don't have to worry about the mess just throw it all away so worth the extra cost. I prefer eating on real dishes and for just one or two people don't use disposable.

I'd prefer not to reuse my slimy tissue for 10 years.
