I am in the Oklahoma Army National Guard. I have been to Afghanistan twice. I'm probably going to Iraq next Summer.
I don't know teh specifics of the conversation you had with your recruiter, but if it's really as you describe, tehn you shouod nto continue dealing with that individual. Find another one to talk to.

Unfortunately some recruiters are big fat liars. My husband and I are in the National Guard (one Army, one Air). He is in Afghanistan and I've been to Iraq. The National Guard is military just like active duty - we do the military thing less often throughout the year because we hold down civilian jobs/go to school or whatever. But we train and fight just like our regular counterparts. You join the military - you sign up for the possibility of deploying. I had a fantastic time in Iraq and learned a great deal. But I didn't kick down doors, patrol the streets or watch my buddies get hurt. You get what you sign up for... choose wisely.

Yes-a third of those deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan are Guard and Reserve and a number of those people have deployed two or three times over the last five years. Anyone who is considering joining the Guard or Reserve should keep that in mind when enlisting. Also a number of them have been activated for extended periods of time and while not necessarily deploying to Southwest Asia have deployed to other places to back-fill the active duty that have deployed to Southwest Asia.

Hey, turkey, you been lied to by the recruiter. You also must be some real kind of dumb yourself if you have not been reading the newspapers or listening to the television news over the past 5 years about National Guard units being called up to go to Iraq - and the high number of casualties among them.

If you are not interested in deploying overseas then the guard is not for you. The guard is such a big part of the total force now that I can just about guarantee you a deployment sometime in your enlistment. When I was in Iraq in 04 I knew guardsmen from Oregon(my home state) who were deployed there, in fact I saw several of them at Camp Victory. Was kind of nice really, seeing familiar shoulder patches and knowing the leaders. If you are in a combat arms MOS you will have high odds of serving in a combat theater.

I was in the California National Guard for 9 years, then they sent me to Iraq. If you join the National Guard, you will go to either Iraq or Afganistan.

yes they do. I just spent the day with another National Guard Unit today that will be deploying soon. I spend a lot of time going out to different units when it is time to deploy, and a lot of them are National Guard. Our Nation depends a lot on our National Guard Units in times of disasters, in our country and outside!

Wow that recruiter just lied to your face.
Of course the Guard gets deployed overseas.
Make sure that really is what your recruiter said. A lot of times recruiters are blamed for lying, it's really just a case of selective hearing in the part of the possible recruit.

Are you kidding me? There are more national guardsmen there in Iraq and Afghanistan now then active duty.
I am in the Indiana NG and my entire brigade is going. And most of them just come back from a deployment 2 years ago.
Most of the men I am going over with- this upcoming deployment is their 2nd or 3rd one.
