My 97 Jeep no longer starts on the first try. I have to turn it over for a few seconds, wait, and then crank it over again until it starts. I replaced the cap and rotor, plugs and wires. It didnt help. I thought I might try checking to see if the timing is off. But, I dont know how. I have a friend with a timing light, but he is a chevy man. I was hoping someone might have some tips, Is there any vacuum lines or something I might have to disconnect while adjusting timing? Thanks for answers!

igniting timing is not adjustable on this truck.
there is a camshaft offset adjustment that requires a scan tool to adjust [spec is zero degrees] this is accomplished by reading the cam sensor offset on the scan tool display and turning the distributor until tool reads zero degrees. this must be done at high mileages due to timing chain stretch.
this rarely causes a problem.
most likely your issues come from rest fuel pressure bleeding down either from a failing check valve at the in tank fuel pump or possibly an injector slowly leaking rest pressure into the intake causing a temporary rich condition until cleared by the extra cranking.
note the two digit version of codes can be read on this truck simply by switching the key on 3 times[in rapid sucession] without going to the crank position, watch the check engine lamp on the dash or digital odometer display on newer models [these will give the 3 digit "P" codes],
[two codes are normal] code 12[start of report] and 55[end of report]
