I would think he was insensitive. Maybe he thought it would make you feel better, or perhaps he did it to lessen his guilt. In any case, it sounds condescending.

i would think he is stupid and insensitive to send me a poem like that... it would really hurt my feelings considering that he didn't care about what i would think if i'd receive such poem....
