The Lumad are a group of indigenous peoples of Southern Mindanao, Philippines.

Lumad is a term meaning"native"
or "indigenous". The group is neither Christian or Muslim. which are the primary religions in that area of the world. They do consider themselves to be Protestant and Animist.

The name Lumad came from the political awakening among various tribes during the martial law regime of President Ferdinand Marcos. It was propagated by the members and affiliates of Lumad-Mindanao. Their main goal was to be self-governing, in keeping with their culture and customary laws. This may be compared to "states rights," in the United States.
