How can I number all my files using only few steps?

I've been organizing all of my files and like many other people we always have TONS of pictures. So from my pictures, most of them are numbered wrong or maybe I want to change the names of all of them at once, but I can't seem to do it. I was wondering if there is a way or maybe a program that can allow me to select like a bulk load of pictures and numbered them from 1-100 or something. Right now what I'm doing is going one by one renaming them so it takes a lot of time.

I'm sure there must be some software that would do this (It would be trivial to write a program to do it) If you don't find anything let me know and I'll make one.
