The insurance on a rental car is always optional. Even though the agent will always try to make you take it.
If you have car insurance already you don't need it. If you are renting it with a Major Credit Card, Your CC company most times will cover any deductible, should you have an accident.
Best to check the rules for your particular CC. Mine covers it, Only if I waive their optional insurance.

There are many misconceptions here. To be licensed, the vehicle must have insurance, ergo, the rental company has insurance on the vehicle.
However, if you are involved in an accident (even a not-at-fault accident) you are responsible to the rental company for the damage to the vehicle (and probably "loss of use" while the vehicle is being repaired). Your credit card (if you have a "Gold", "Platinum" or similar card) used for the rental may provide insurance coverage, check with your card issuer. Or, you may have an endorsement on your personal auto insurance that covers rental vehicles.
All the Collision Damage Waiver (which isn't really insurance) does is remove all liability from you in the event the rental vehicle is damage.

In most states, all cars on the road are required to have insurance one way or another. Some insurance policies cover you while you are in a rental car, and some credit cards provide insurance. If you don't have your own, you must buy the one the car company provides (sometimes they provide more than the state minimum, so you can tell them you only want the minimum required by law).

I rented a car a few weeks ago and we waived the insurance, but we had to have proof that we had car insurance. You'd be crazy not to get the insurance if you don't have any. Think about it.... you total the rental company's car...you're gonna have to pay for it. Can you afford it?

Any insurance you get will in ordinary terms kick in after your guy or woman insurance has been exhausted. Plus, maximum credit enjoying cards furnish criminal accountability insurance immediately in case you employ their card to hire the vehicle. I in no way get it.

Not if the rental car says you don't have to. But if you don't have any, and you don't want to buy it, they don't have to rent to you. And they won't.
