I am hard-working, 13 years old girl in santa barbara.. I really want a job, because I want to help my parents with my outrageous spendings... Babysitting does not work! Because firstly, I babysit my cousins , and get no money! There is no chores needed to be done, no doing trash or w/e, and even if there was, i'd get no money anyways. Lemonade sale squashes! I bet a day's salary from the lemonade stand will be less than one of my shirts, so that's no help... And doing community work is free!

It's my understanding that in California you (as a minor) can get an employer-specific work permit - it renews annually - that allows you to work a certain number of hours/day. I think that only those under 12 are exempt from eligibility which of course does not describe you.

Now, with this work permit there of course would be restrictions. You would not be able to work on a school day. You would be able to work up to 8 hours/day on a non-school day.

Once you turn 14 you would be able to work up to 3 hours/day on a school day and 8 hours on a non-school day. In total once you turn 14 you would be able to work up to 18 hours in a week, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. when school is in session, until 9 p.m. from June 1st through Labor Day, and as many as 40 hours per week when school is out. The laws change again for 16 and 17 year olds.

I'm saying... maybe you could get a 'real' job at McDonald's or something. Definitely look into this. This information is just information I got from the web. I'm from Illinois - not California. Contact your local Department of Labor office and see what they can tell you.

Good luck. I'm sure that you if you want to work hard enough you'll find your opportunity.

PS - Also, if you start working via one of these permits understand that if your work starts affecting your health or how you're doing in school it can/may be revoked.

Watch Craigslist http://santabarbara.craigslist.org/ and check your local classified ads for part-time jobs. You might be able to get a paid internship somewhere, even as an office assistant a few hours a week after school, or even tutoring. Check with your teachers too - I'm sure they have had students ask the same question before.

Or, design your own shirts and start a small business!!

Why don't you twirl one of those signs on the weekends. I hear they make about $10 an hour. I don't know about Santa Barbara, but in Orange County they are all over the place!

Just wait till you're older
