I had a root canal 5 months ago almost to the day. I haven't went in to get the crown put on yet (exceeded my insurance maximum for this year so was going to 01-02-08), so it just has a big filling. Surprise, today I ate something and part of my tooth broke. Now what? Can it be fixed? Or am I going to lose the tooth?

The same thing happened to me - the root treatment is so big that the remainder of the tooth is weaker than before. You will need an inlay or a crown, depending on how much is left. See your dentist before some more breaks away.

If it has had a root canal and a crown was never placed on it, then it will probably be extracted. If it has never had a root canal then he may try to save it with a root canal, post, build up and crown. But this will be very expensive. So if money is an issue, I would guess that the tooth will be extracted to day.

A similar thing happened to me, AFTER I got the crown. They had to remove the tooth. It was way in the back, though, so its not really a problem, no one can see it either.

Depends how broken the tooth is, how good your dentist is and how much he likes tooth conservation. A member of my family has had his broken tooth mended over and over again. Unfortunately the dentist can't repair it this time and he's waiting to have it sorted.

Your tooth probably can still be salvaged, just get yourself to the dentist and charge the bill.

I'm pretty sure that they can fill it with tooth enamel so you dn't have to lose the tooth.

Loosing the tooth would have been cheaper in the long run! Sad but this is how the world is today.
