drivers side and onto the floor mat (in my car)?
At first I thought "maybe" it was the antifreeze (cause it's yellow) but I don't know that the antifreeze is on the driver's side of the car (since the container for antifreeze is on the passenger's side).
I need to know just what it is that I need to get fixed (and maybe even how costly it might be...is that a minor fix?).

yeah Bill, the antifreeze IS yellow, I know because it's Prestone and I add it to the car myself.

can someone tell me for sure that break fluid is yellow? I only know it to be a clear liquid.

thanks liam but the brake fluid is very dark and dirty and mechanics won't change it out, so it can't be the brake fluid that's the problem.

the washer fluid is blue so it can't be that (and I know that isn't working).

I'll have to take it to the mechanic. I can't make a best choice.

Mystery there, but the brake fluid master cylinder is on that side, and is connected to the brake pedal by a lever, also the windshield washer fluid is under the hood on that side, and the hoses come close to the dash. Check those levels. Might be something else if those are full. Also note: The brakes won't work if there is a leak, and the pedal will be soft.

New brake fluid will be either yellow or blue. Old fluid will be a very dirty brown. Check under the bonnet and see what colour the brake fliuid is in the reservior. It will be directly in front of the driver's seat and near the firewall.
If it is brake fluid, it will also smell a bit fishy (ie like a fish). Get it checked IMMEDIATELY if that's what it could be.

I once had the same problem that you describe in an older model car. The yellow liquid turned out to be gearbox fluid (manual transmission). The seal was worn in the speedo cable from the gearbox to the speedo and was allowing the oil to work it's way up the cable to the back of the speedo where it dripped down onto the brake peddle!!
(hope my terminology is correct-- from Australia)

Anti-freeze isn't yellow. Might be either brake fluid, or if the vehicle has a standard transmission it might be fluid out of the clutch master cylinder. Either way depending on the vehicle it can cost $250 or more to fix.

It probably is a bad heater core, unless you know some mean people. Depending on the car, replacing the heater core is not fun. The part in most cases is pretty cheap, its the guy fixing it that costs a lot. But, I'd check around, there has got to be a good deal somewhere. In some cars you have to remove almost the entire dash for access, but if it's older it's a little easier. If you'd like a good idea of what it takes to do one. Go to your local parts store and look at or buy a repair manual and look at the section that tells you how to replace a heater core.

Hey Miss Sophie ........ my hubbie's motor mechanic and he reckons that you should stick your head underneath the dash board and check if it's coming through the fire wall (the part that stops your feet going into the engine). If it is, then apparently you are more than likely leaking brake fluid which is dangerous because without brakes we all know what will happen.............. take it to a mechanic sweetie and get it fixed pronto.

sounds like the seal is leaking on the master cylinder. check your brake fluid level NOW. This is nothing to put off till later it has to be repaired, the 2 things you can not cut corners with is steering and stopping, both of these can cause people to die when they fail.
Please get this checked now!
