I know how to tame hamsters, and ive been working with this one for a couple of months, but this is just an evil hamster. Most of my hamsters that bit, were territorial, and only bit in the cage....this hamster (Zeppelin) bites in, or out of the cage, if I kiss him, he bites my face. So, I try to hold him as little as possible, but he has a HUGE cage.

More like 3 cages attatched, 2 are $60 cages that I cut holes in to attatch tubes to, and one is a smaller cage, all attatched by tubes. He has tons of toys in these cages, and lots of treats and vegtables.

Do you think hes happy. I usually let him out for about 30 minutes during the whole week, I have scars on my hands from Zeppelin, and Im afraid ill slam him on the ground from being startled when he bites me (ive had this happen before)

Zeppelin is a female dwarf hamster, who has had 3 other owners before me, they all returned him to the petstore, so when I got there, the manager basically gave him to me begging me to keep him because he can't keep moving around all the hamster cages, so I did, and I feel really bad for saying this, but this is the first hamster ive had (and trust me, ive had a lot) that I truly do not like

Do you think this hamster is happy living with me, or suffering. Should I suck up the pain of the bites and hold him anyways.

*im not going to wear gloves while handeling this hamster, hes to fast and gloves are to slow. Occasionally I let him run in a hamster ball, but he doesn't really enjoy this

He can't have a buddy, he is to aggressive, I considered this, but he is fine living a stress free life, no need to risk messing that up

Lycanuss, you got to remember, hamsters aren't as smart as rats, they can't learn their names, or tricks or anything like that

and besides, im not stupid enough to feed my hamster chocolate

Zeppelin is probably not unhappy, but it sounds like the poor little guy has been traumatized before coming under your care. You still *might* be able to make friends with him, but chances are he just wants to enjoy his spaciaous home & adundant treats & toys in solitude.
I wouldn't stop trying though & you sound like someone who will love him & give him a good home even if he doesn't become friendlier. In October, we adopted a "problem" hamster who we were actually warned about & I wasn't very optomistic about befriending him but wanted to give him a good life no matter what. We're making slow but very obvious progress & I'm so happy that he lets me hold him now. We've also had rats & mice who took a long time to socialize (although most of our rats have been sweet from the first) & a couple who simply were terrified of us their entire lives despite everything we tried. But we never stopped trying & of course we never put the blame on the poor little guys.
Good luck with Zeppelin. Cool name.

In my opinion they are mean; I'm not sure if all kinds are though. I've heard Robo's are really sweet and I think they may be a type of dwarf but I'm not sure. The first hamster I bought was a regular little brown dwarf and he was impossible to hold without him biting us and even though he was cute to watch we wanted one we can hold, so we brought him back and got a teddy bear hamster(syrian) and I have two now and love them! They have NEVER bitten me and they are very sweet and playful, good luck!

Honestly, if you want him to become tame, reduce his large cage to a smaller sized one, and take him out from the cage every single day for handling, offer him a different kind of treat a day, he will learn that eventually you are not here to harm him, you have to rememeber this poor little ham has been house hopping, and all the new smells and sounds wll scare the life out of him.

There is no such thing as an evil hamster, their are aggressive ones but they can be tamed.

He will take a longer time to calm down as opposed to a syrian, simply because he is smaller and has to act three times his size just to survive., the cage reduction will offer you more quality time with your hamster, I find the more elaborate the cage, the less time people tend to handle their hamster because they believe all their needs are met, and honestly they are, but if you want to enjoy your pocket pet you will have to spend that extra time with him.

Forget the excersize ball, if he doesn't like it no sense on sticking him in it, spend the time with him, coaxing him out of the cage with treats and avoid the kissing until he calms down, handle him very gently, cup him in your hands, don't just grab him, rememeber predators attack from the top.

Make sure you handle his bedding, food, and toys so your smell is all over it, he will grow to learn and accept your scent.

Also, I am pleased to know you won't be getting him a friend, that would be a horrible blood bath.

Best of luck !

I think that he may be happiest when left alone. Each hamster has it's own personality, this is just a rare one that likes to be left alone. He could have been born like that or was influenced by a previous owner.

I'm sorry you are having such a hard time with him. Sounds like you are pretty handy with cage modifications. And I understand your dislike of gloves. Perhaps, you could fashion a ladder system that you can place in the cage temporally at his playtime. You can put it in for him to climb out directly to the area you usually have him play remove it for a while and then when it's time for him to go home replace it and wait for him to crawl back into his cage. Wal-mart has a playpen for small animals that sells for around $15.00. I wish you luck in finding a way that you and your hamster can find a way to live together peacefully.

i had a dwarf hamster and he was evil. if anyone looked at him or walked past him, he used to go mental and start making hissing noises and attacking the metal cage bit of his house. i would recommend getting a syrian hamster or maybe a couple of same sex gerbils, because they're nice little pets too. also AnnaBee is right. Its not cool to pick them up for the first few days.

He sounds like he might just be a bit neurotic. If you're provided good care, which it sounds like you are, then he should be ok.
